WSOP Champions: The Gentleman - Tom McEvoy (1983)
Dec 18, 2007The year was 1983. Michael Jackson danced with the dead, and Ghandi walked away with 8 Oscars, dominating the event. Likewise Tom McEvoy dominated 107 other competitors, winning his first and only WSOP Main Event title.
The prize money this year had increased to an all time high of $540,000. At the final table this ex-accountant fought tooth and nail overcoming Irishman Donnacha O' Dea (the first European to reach the final table), Doyle Brunson and eventually a heads-up battle with Rod Peate to become World Champion.
McEvoy's tally of WSOP money finishes has since risen to 21, and if you want to know who convinced the organizers to make the WSOP a non-smoking tournament, look no further than Tom McEvoy.
