So it looks like the bill to make online gambling officially illegal should go into effect very shortly. It's just awaiting Bush's signature. Any thoughts?
My guess is that all of these current online poker companies will go the Napster route and bite the dust. The American companies will then go the iTunes route and rebuild the industry with a different legal and tax structure. Basically, the American government is protecting its commerce from the Euros. It will return soon enough in a slightly different form and 45% of your winnings going to the government.
me and pop were discussing this earlier. Since we dont live in the US, we are still legally allowed to play here. What we were concerned about is how safe our money is. Is the site going to go under? How many players will there be? I only hope its one of those things that cant be enforced, and that people continue to play regardless.
Online gambling is already illegal. As I understand it, the law is about depositing funds at gaming sites. Even once Bush signs this into law, it won't take effect for several months and the Treasury Dept. has to come up with some rules to actually enforce it. Unbeknownst to the politicians is that no one actually deposits funds directly from their bank accounts. I can't see how the T Dept. could restrict deposits to Neteller or Firepay or Paypal. Of course, I didn't think this bill would make it through. I hope those voting yes will be "rewarded" this fall.
Less players, smaller tournaments specially the WSOP as the Americans that qualified from poker sites will be unable to do so. Many european sites are refusing to accept bets from the US, some long before this bill was passed and they still have decent games. Most of the egaming companies come from Europe and the healthy sites will survive and thrive on just European customers. Don't laugh. The bookmakers, the Tote, on course betting, have all moved online and these high street names will move the european industry forward. PokerRoom etc. might collapse because of their lack or presence but William Hill, Corals etc. are in every British high street. They have already worked out taxation with the local goverments, even sorting it out with Italy. Sorry about the ramble.
There actually are no Poker sites that are headquartered in the US as online gambling is already illegal. This legislation is an attempt to stop credit card companies from allowing US citizens to deposit using a credit card. Alot of companies are nervous because the US has such far reaching power and don't want their assets frozen or to be arrested upon traveling to the US. Pokerroom is actually headqaurtered where online gambling is illegal as well, so it's native people can't play on this site.
Fund transfers will be illegal. But there is a lot to play out yet. The government doesn't have a slam dunk. The banking industry has said it won't be able to enforce the transfer situation and are awaiting further info. They lobbied their interest and seem comfortable.
