I feel like a beginner

Oct 5, 2006 01:38 AM. Post 1
I feel like i need to reset my short-handed style of playing poker.
I have no problem getting to 4th place of a SNG. When i get to either 5th or 4th i have around 3500. When there are 4 people left, the average stack is 3750. By this time, there is always a bigger stack which means there is a short stack or two.

Blinds are usually 100-200 or higher. It is here where i am having problems. Naturally, everyone is tight because no-one wants to go out first. I usually give the shortstacks time to knock themselves out but quite often it doesnt happen. So someone soon has to take a chance.
I just dont know when to raise to attack the blinds. I feel i dont want to raise the shortstack, because they often are the ones who want to take a chance to double up. I often dont want to steal against the chip leader because they often are willing to gamble to take you out. So many times i try to "pick my spot" to steal but i either get put all in over the top or go all in with a 2nd best hand.
So i find myself waiting for hands that never come. I basically feel like i need to start my shorthanded game from scratch. Popeye posted something similar, when to push etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Wish me luck for this weekend. I am gonna need it!

if your big stack isnt looking to dominate he can be the easiest to steal against...he just wants to make the money and his blinds are nothing. you have to steal, but also steal preflop...raise in position...and bet the pot on the flop when they check it to you. I find that if i dont get screwed real early ill consistantly make the final 3. My shortgame is good though.

The mini bubble is often the best time to steal. Continue to play your same aggressive style that got you to where you are at. Bet 3-5xBB no matter what hand you are dealt and this will give you the ability to let go of a hand if need be. By betting the same it doesn't give any clue as to what type of hand you have. If you have a monster play it the same as a marginal hand. The worst thing you can do when the table tightens up is to follow along. This makes the game a lottery. Push with position. Don't put all your chips at risk unless you are really strong.
I played with a guy who raised everytime he had position and it made it a tough decision every hand. He got action everytime he caught a monster and ended up winning even after I took 2/3 of his stack by using his aggression against him.

I find the table is usually uber tight 4 handed. In that situation, people will fold to a miniraise preflop. Thus I make a lot of small raises to steal blinds. If you get raised over the top, you only lost a small bet. If the table is calling these bets, and you'll know quite quickly, then its time to start betting 5xbb or more preflop. A 1k bet is intimidating to someone who only has 2k; they know they're playing for all their chips, and they know you are calling so they have no fold equity in pushing. Riskier strategy, but sometimes necessary; must adapt to the table.

You might want to just load up on some 5-seat SNG's to get some experience. I did that for my HU game and it did wonders.
