Too loose a call?

Oct 29, 2006 04:27 PM. Post 1
$3+$0 (real money), hand #523,265,317
Qualifier to $20+2 Single Table Tournament

Seat 1: MO Dip ($1,165 in chips)
Seat 2: sam smalaidh ($1,960 in chips)
Seat 5: 1IDjack ($2,375 in chips)
Seat 6: whiskey d ($1,815 in chips)
Seat 7: nycpete70 ($2,165 in chips)
Seat 9: spaceboy761 [JS,AS] ($1,545 in chips)
Seat 10: rawspool ($3,975 in chips)

ANTES/BLINDS
rawspool posts blind ($25), MO Dip posts blind ($50).

PRE-FLOP
sam smalaidh folds, 1IDjack folds, whiskey d bets $200, nycpete70 folds, spaceboy761 calls $200, rawspool folds, MO Dip folds.

FLOP [board cards 4H,KD,AC ]
whiskey d checks, spaceboy761 ???

Two things here. First, was this too loose of a call pre-flop with AJs all things considered? Second, we've got TP with J kicker and no real draws. Sweet. How much should we bet to make the best out of this?

pot has 475 in it. Id prob bet around 300. I dont think the call is too loose, as long aS you are able to get out if you can see that your out kicked.

I don't think it is too loose. I sometimes check here to try and draw a bet out of him on the turn. If I am betting, then I like 3/4 to full pot, so that a raise is significant enough to let you know that you are beat.

A little loose but you've got pretty much what you wanted.

With this being a $3 qualifier and 1st Prize in the only worthwhile prize, you're going to have to try and double up or go broke in my opinion.

I'm guessing he's got Ax (hopefully not AK or AQ) or a PP. Could even have Kxs depending on how loose he's been playing. If he's got AA or KK then I'm paying him off and moving on to my next $3 game.

I think 300-350 is about the right amount and I'd be wanting to see some action.

FLOP [board cards 4H,KD,AC ]
whiskey d checks, spaceboy761 bets $500, whiskey d bets $1,000, spaceboy761 calls $500.

TURN [board cards 4H,KD,AC,JH ]
whiskey d bets $375, spaceboy761 calls $345 and is all-in.

RIVER [board cards 4H,KD,AC,JH,4S ]

SHOWDOWN
whiskey d shows [ AD,10H ]
spaceboy761 shows [ JS,AS ]
whiskey d wins $30, spaceboy761 wins $3,165.

SUMMARY
Dealer: spaceboy761
Pot: $3,195
MO Dip, loses $50
sam smalaidh, loses $0
1IDjack, loses $0
whiskey d, bets $1,575, collects $30, net -$1,545
nycpete70, loses $0
spaceboy761, bets $1,545, collects $3,165, net $1,620
rawspool, loses $25

I think I survived a bunch of mistakes here. First, $500 was probably an overbet. I knew that I needed to protect my hand here, but the bet still has to be something that I could get away from. Second, calling that reraise with nothing but a jack kicker was awful. I can't remember exactly what I was thinking. It turns out that I was ahead the whole time, but still a very lucky pot for me.

i find it very odd that the preflop raiser check raised you. ISnt he supposed to have control of the hand by betting preflop? I hate whn people do that, it just confuses me.

Space,

I think your only mistake was not pushing all-in when you were check raised.

You weren't going to fold your last 345 so you might have well just pushed it all in then.

Try not to over think the $3 qualifiers. You had top pair decent kicker. If you're not going to play your Ace all the way, why call in the 1st place?

I usually hang onto the extra $345 just to see if the guy is retarded enough to fold if I bet it on the turn. If I try it 100 times it might work once, but nothing to lose by trying. I've had it work few times.

And yes, you have to be over-aggressive in these qualifiers. Second place only get you another qualifier ticket, so 1st place is the only way to really cash.
