I checked the turn here after reading many hands about keeping the pot small. If i had have bet here, pushed all in, he might have folded which could be better. Im not going to a showdown so i win the pot right there. Was this a good time to keep the pot small or not one of those times
In a SNG, I push this turn. In a cash game, I may check to keep the pot small. Different games I think call for different strategies. When I pick up AA in a SNG, I'm looking to take down a big pot and give myself a chance to make the money.
He had a decent implied odds hand but couldn't wait. The all-in push was as dangerous as any betting could be. He really isn't even represent well and screamed he didn't have much. He just had enough outs to get lucky with an outright gamble that paid off.
With that stack, I guess my question is: Why not let him steal at that point or make him make the tough call on the flop and never let him bluff the turn? I'd rather be the one forcing than calling -- even if I think it might be the best hand.
I've got a blog coming up in a couple of days that talks about KK but it isn't that far off from that AA. Early, I like to bet enough to steal the blinds or make someone commit while I'm ahead. The article starts off with the old saw "KK either wins a little pot or loses a big one. Who said that? Anyone who's played poker." I now want to price the implied odds callers out and if I lose it I do it on my terms. I also say it isn't that strong an EV move but I don't consider that the worst thing that can happen. I reserve the other way for when the blinds get important.
He made a poor call preflop and an even worse call on the flop. It's impossible to put someone on that hand having called a preflop 5X the BB then a large flop bet. With my read of his hand possibilitys calling earlier betting i put him on a mid to large PP or Ace and a face. I would have a hard time getting away from this hand as well. i think I would have bet the turn however as a 2nd 2 doesn't scare me. the flush draw appears and you need to protect against it. I just read Scott Fischmans new book and his strategy early in tourn is to lay down all but nut hands to all in raises even if you think you are being bluffed. He recommends raising like you did preflop 5X the BB as people will call anything less. I know its hard to lay this down but you would still have time to recoup and recover to have have a chance in a better spot.
