2pair

Jan 17, 2008 02:19 PM. Post 1
it often happened to me that i had top pair on the flop,
but got eaten up by 2pair.

lets say i got an average stack and call with A9os, two other players also call and the flop comes 2h5h9s. pot is 300 $.
sounds good to me, so i bet about 2/3 to give the flush draws bad pot odds.

one player folds, the other one raises me to 600.
what is the best play?

sometimes i called or even reraised and won against K9 or 89 in such situations. sometimes i lost loads of money against hands like 52.

i could not find out how to spot a difference between a 2 pair or another highpair with a worse kicker.

any suggestions?
thx!

Raising pre-flop with hands you want to play will often drive out hands that can flop bottom two pair.

That's one tip; I'm sure there are others to come.

thank you for answering! i guess A9os is an example for an in-between-hand. too good to fold it (in some situations only) and too bad to raise (in most situations). but i know that lots of people would raise just any hand they play. that seems to work for some guys. is this what you meant?

cheers,
andi

"A9os is an example for an in-between-hand. too good to fold it"

personally, I consider A9o a weak hand, to be folded in all positions except the small blind (I can limp in for cheap) or on the button with no raisers ahead of me in either case.

I don't like raising with this hand except as a blind steal move at a weak/passive table.

Admittedly, not raising this hand leaves me open to someone flopping bottom two but I think domination is a much bigger risk with a hand that would struggle to make a straight or a flush.

Totally agree with raising pre-flop if you have a good. However, there are some real clowns out there who will call nearly anythiny, so just be prepared to take a senseless beating sometimes.

I would think of A9 as being 'ace rag', which is a hand you can easily lose a lot of money with if you hit the 'rag'.

That's why I agree I would through it away if it was too costly, and only push it if I hit both of the cards or a flush with A9 suited.
