TurnDawg55's Rags to Riches Tale

Apr 27, 2008 12:00 AM. Post 1
TurnDawg55 has had quite the exciting run on PokerRoom.com the last few months, and truly has one of the best bust to glory stories that we've heard in awhile. Selected for the LabRats II competition, he was down to less than 50 cents in his account and forced to use player points in freerolls to try to build his bankroll back up.

And build back up he did, rocketing all the way to over $1,500 to win the competition and take down the extra money and a $500 + $40 ticket to an online finals qualifier for first place. And what did he do with that ticket? Why, he used it to take down a 2008 WSOP online finals, booking his seat on Team PokerRoom.com for the WSOP Main Event and winning a $17,500 trip package! Not bad at all, going from less than .50 to just about $20,000 in winnings, all in the span of just a few weeks!

We caught up with the very busy TurnDawg55 somewhere in between jamming with his band Sub Rosa, playing ice hockey and watching the Canucks to get his thoughts on his poker game, LabRats II, and Vegas:

"I've been playing poker since I was a kid, I guess I would have started when I was about 12 or so, being 31 right now that would put me just shy of 20 years.

Before I started the LabRats competition I was almost exclusively a cash game player (both online and in real world casinos). I would say the split would have been 95% cash/ring games and 5% tourneys. Now I've quite flip-flopped. I played a huge amount of tourneys as a rat and playing online I now feel there is a better opportunity for wins in tourneys vs cash/ring games because of the escalating blinds. As far was what I learned from LabRats, the best piece of advice would be "never give up!". In the Lab Rats competition I got pushed down so far that I couldn't buy into any tourneys anymore and only had my PP to save me with Green and Silver Room tourneys. I kept trucking though and a couple wins in the loyalty tourneys had me back with a small bankroll and I was able to keep pushing this up until I stood atop the leaderboard. Also on comebacks, in my recent win in the WSOP online final I found myself in 9th chip position out of 10 at the final table I was on (I think the leader had around 22k and I had 3k). I picked my moments and was able to double up a couple times and get right back into the game. Before long I was leading and managed to take down the number one spot. Anyway the moral is definitely keep going and don't underestimate that little pile of chips in front of you, its never over until its over!

I can't say enough about what the LabRats competition did for my poker game. I've always been a decent, perhaps even above average player but nothing can help your game like 2 months of regular poker play. I would say I got into an average of 3 hours of poker a day while I was in the comp and the constant play does a lot for your game. You start to realize patterns, and you start to understand what these patterns mean.

I have been to Vegas a few times and I love it. My game plan in the past has always been to play as much poker as I can while I'm not too boozy and then when/if I start to get tipsy, I leave the poker tables and head for the craps tables! I generally do pretty well in Vegas, either breaking even or winning a bit..."I

Well from all of us here at PokerRoom.com we wish you all the best of luck in Vegas and hope you end up not just winning a bit, but a hell of a lot!

Way to go!!!! Have fun in Vegas! Next time you should pick a better team to root for though. I used to have a Canucks watch, but I had to stop wearing it because it kept losing time...

after time...

after time....

and so on.

Game 7 in 1994 was very disappointing, got stuck downtown in the traffic jam and the middle of the riot. mad

Lol, I don't think it is too pleasant to refer to turndawg as a rag before he joined PR :P. Isn't that like calling a McDonald's fryer operator a loser before joining McDonald's?

Hey Matty, thanks for taking exception on my behalf. Was definitely not a rag before this, I would at least consider myself having been a nice washcloth...

Kim thanks as always for the support! Gonna do my best to make y'all proud.

On the Canucks... yeah don't know what to say about those boys except that I'm glad I'm not following their example of petering out right when it really matters... I suppose that remains to be seen though... this WSOP is gonna be crazy... anyone know if there are any projections on numbers for entrants or anything like that yet?

Northvancouv... will see what I can do about getting you a souvenir... The souvenir will increase in value depending on how far I get though so lets hope its not a napkin... very_happy

Rock n roll!
