wilko46 has a $173,808 pay day in The Grand XXIV

Apr 28, 2008 09:28 AM. Post 1
If all the action from the WSOP Finals wasn’t enough over the weekend, things just got bigger and bigger on PokerRoom.com with the latest installment of PokerRoom’s premier tournament; The Grand XXIV.

The Grand is already the biggest online shorthanded tournament with a guaranteed prize pool of 750k, but with a whopping 816 players registering for The Grand XXIV it pushed the total pot over 800k. That meant a $173,808 pay day for the player good enough to finish on top!

The players could choose to start on Day 1A or Day 1B, and after 5 hours play of intense play on each day 218 players survived to take their chips stacks into Day 2.

The top five after Day 1A and Day 1B;

---KEKE--- - 123139 in chips
Jessieland - 117189 in chips
tomteforever -111847 in chips
_RaLaN_ - 107451 in chips
marcgadgaard – 104423 in chips

Grand tournaments always end up being marathons, and this instalment was no different, with it taking 7 hours on Day 2 for the field to be whittled down to two tables. Of the top twelve Abe1976 was holding the chip lead with 1,518,961 in chips and RomaRoma1 was in 2nd with 1,177,966

40 minutes later and it got down to the final table with Abe1976 still holding a handy chip lead and PanicPanic1 moving into 2nd.

The final table;

Abe1976 - 2,991,497
PanicPanic1 - 2,243,050
---KEKE--- - 949,285
RomaRoma1 - 731,989
wilko46 - 625,011
Grazzhopper - 619,168

With blinds at 20000/40000 it wasn’t long before the first big showdown of the final table played out. Chip leader Abe1976 called ---KEKE---‘s pre-flop all-in shove and hit consecutive J’s on the turn and river to end ---KEKE---‘s night in 6th place ($24,480).

Low Stacked Grazzhopper was then out shortly after in 5th ($34,272) when his pocket Q’s got out drawn by RomaRoma1 who paired an A on the flop and took the chip lead.

With the play down to four-handed the action tightened up considerably. RomaRoma1 was able to extend his chip lead, but Abe1976, wilko46, and PanicPanic1 were not willing to give up any easy chips without a fight.

After almost an hour of tight four-handed play it was wilko46 who broke out of the shackles when he called PanicPanic1’s pre-flop all-in and turned over Kc Kd to dominate PanicPanic1’s Kh7h. With the board running out Ad Jc 8c 8d 4s wilko46 took a nice pot and sent PanicPanic1 to rail in 4th ($50,592).

With only three players remaining RomaRoma1 still had a big lead over Abe1976 and wilko46.

The final three;

RomaRoma1 - 5,082,182 in chips
Abe1976 - 1,636,180 in chips
wilko46 - 1,441,638 in chips

RomaRoma1 then built on his lead further when his pocket 9’s were enough to bust Abe1976 who was all-in pre-flop, but couldn’t improve on Qc Kc.

The departure of Abe1976 in 3rd ($71,808) gave RomaRoma1 a huge chip lead over wilko46 going into heads up, sitting on 6,988,362 in chips to 1,117,638.

wilko46 wasn’t burdened by the size of RomaRoma1 stack however, doubling up twice in quick succession and taking an unlikely chip lead right on the 9 hour mark. With wilko46 holding the chip lead, the scene was set for a ripping final hand.

With 160k in the pot pre-flop, the flop showed Ah Js Jd and both players checked.
2h came out on the turn and wilko46 bet out 80k. RomaRoma1 then raised it to 160k before wilko46 bumped it up again to 240k. RomaRoma1 then raised it again by putting all of his chips in the middle and wilko46 to insta-called.

wilko46 turned over pocket A’s giving him a flopped full house that he had slow played beautifully. RomaRoma1 turned over Jh 3s giving him flopped trips, but he was going to have hit another J to stay alive.

Any chance of RomaRoma1 hitting his one-outer on the river was crushed when a 4h dropped and wilko46 took 1st place in The Grand XXIV and a cool $173,808. RomaRoma1 couldn’t have been too distressed coming 2nd, with $106,080 still making it a pretty nice pay day!

Well done to all players who competed in another thrilling instalment of The Grand, and a big congratulations goes to all those who navigated the huge field to make the top 90 and get paid.

Be sure to book your place in next months Grand XXV to be part of the action!
