Toppair + Flushdraw//How would have you played this?

Oct 9, 2008 01:27 AM. Post 1
Hello fellas,

I went down to the Casino and played some 2/5€ NL Holdem Cashgame...

Unfortunate I lost the hole load in just 12 Hands. It went all well(I was up to 580€), up to this hand:

8 Players at the Table.

I was sitting in the cutof with K(d) J(d).

UTG folds
4th folds
5th limps
6th folds
Me raise to 20€
button folds
smallblind folds
bigblind folds
5th calls
-------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ---- Flop: 4(d)5(d)K(h) | I felt very good here...its a dreamflop.
Potsize (47€)

5th seat checks.
Me bet 30€.
5th seat calls.
-------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ---- Turn: 8(s) | actually not really a scarecard...
Potsize (107€)

seat5 checks --after 5sek staring at the board ...
Me bet 75€ |Toppair...decent Kicker and good Flushdraw
seat5 pounders about 10sek than finally calls.
-------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ---- River: J(s) | Now I feel comfortable happy
Potsize(262€)

seat5 checks. | so, at this point I put him on a weaker twopair or a better King
probably, I didn't think he would check a set or the nuts on the river.

So I bet 100€ for value.

AND THEN FOR MY SHOCK...he smiles at me like a retard and says allin...
I felt like wtfoO??

Now I had this bad feeling that he had a set...but I didnt want to get bluffed out neither...so I called..

He turns over 6(s) 7(s) for the nuts
And Me K(d) J(d) for twopair...

Would you play it different? Or did u see something where you would be sure that he has a set or even the nuts?
Thanks 4 help.

If I'm going to raise I'm making it at least 25 (4bb+1bb/limper) and in my (limited) B&M experience an extra bb seems to be the norm. Unless this tight play is the norm I'm not raising such a poor hand and may or may not limp depending on my opponents willingness to stack off when I hit big.

As played I probably bet 35-40 on the flop although you're bet is fine, imo.

I'm not really sure about betting a higher % of the pot on the turn when you miss your first oppurtunity with the flush draw. I'd prob bet 55-60. (If I bet 35 on flop and pot is 117 I'd prob bet 60-70)

Without a read we can assume the villain is pretty bad (most are) and I guess I like a vbet on the river. 150 probably. Alarm bells go off with the check push tho. Player has to be an absolute maniac to make that a good call.

If a guy keeps calling in a pretty big pot i wouldnt bet the river with top 2 pair. There is a str8 threat and he can indeed have been hanging on to pocket jacks. trapping with a set seems unlikely with the flushdraw on the board....

So my main doubt about how u played the hand was the river bet.

Thats only my humble opinion...

What did you give him for his pre-flop limp? You should always give your opponent some sort of hand and then play accordingly unless the betting tells you different.
To me, I would assume he has a small pocket pair for the limp.
After the flop he check-calls
After the turn he check-calls
Alarm bells should be going off now
The river seems like a dream card but dreams have a way of turning into nitghtmares pretty quick.

The only problem with the value bet on the river is that to a check-raise you have to fold as only a very small players are good enough to use that as a bluff. In ordinary games with ordinary players there is no way someone will check-raise on the river as a bluff. That move is beyond most peoples comprehension.
