You have two moves in that situation and calling is not one of them. Sure in hindsight playing that hand would have netted you a win. But making a flat call in that spot isn't a move I'd make. In that instance all of the cards were lower than your jacks, but let's say there was a king on the flop, or a queen, or an ace. Do you push in then? Probably not. Playing it safe is never a bad move. Making money is better than not making money. And if you are a good enough player you don't need to have good cards to win.

Also, what type of game were you playing? Because to me the more important question isn't what you "should" have done, but why would "A KIA" call "Rex Cramer" in that spot, that is a horrible play. Obviously you were playing with people in "full retard" mode. After witnessing a play like that I would be second guessing every move I make. It's impossible to get a read on somebody who is willing to do the stupidest of things.

Yes it was the CC final, 160th got $670 , 165th got zero.

If it was going to be HU, I would have shoved as there are only 3 hands that dominate and 3 hands that are near coin flips. A KIA threw the spanner in the works for me by smooth calling.

I did not think a shove was beneficially at this stage as their stacks were big enough and odds ripe enough to each insta call plus I have had JJ hammered enough times in similar situations to be concerned about being "pokerroomed". So you can see why my choice was to consider a call or fold only.

My thought on "just" calling was having to let go of the hand if any over cards came on the flop - hence the choice to fold altogether.

I ended up 111th.

Your point is valid suf, in hindsight it did cost me money as I could have at least cashed in 50th (if not higher and more than double my eventual cash) as the triple up would have given me a playable stack.

What is worse is that I had TT in BB a few hands later and had to call one player, who became the shorty, when folded around, only to lose to his K7 and being left with 4.5 BB and 4 players still to die!

Calling is really bad.

It's really important to not play a tournament if you're worried about bubbling. I had a similar issue in the CC nearly a year ago and I haven't played one since(I don't think). Play at a buyin you're comfortable with and just avoid qualifiers.

I'm very late replying to this thread, but i only just read it.

Your ONLY move here is to shove preflop. It does not depend on anything, you just have to move all in.

I don't mean to be harsh, but it is folds like yours that make these higher buyin tournaments with a large number of satellite entrants so exploitable and profitable.

As Sufur said, if you are afraid of bubbling you shouldn't have played the qualifier to the tournament in the first place.

I wish i could play the Championchip every day....

5 to go id fold . Of course if drunk its all in. Not be shoving JJ normally in that position
3 orbits to go you in the money.
Dont listen to all this advice. Just bet how you feel. Its easy to say after hand is played.
Spot logic. Not always good. very_happy

IM SOBER NOW.
You say the only move is shove preflop Puggy. I accept your reasoning for this and the fact if you win and double or treble up your tourney will look much better later on.
My reasons for not pushing would be (1) you will certainly be called be one if not the two others. (2) JJ ? would you be shoving TT or 99. (3) Only 5 to go so in 1 orbit you should be in the money.
I know its the right thing to shove but surely folding aint a mental move?
Us donks have opinions (misguided at times i grant you) but are willing to learn.

I definately fold in this tourney on the bubble and I think a few of the players saying push would do too wink but thats only because my ABI is $4.
