Just signed for my first game since switching to PS, a 5k start stack 30min blinds $10 MTT - shouldnt take long right?

I also emailed them because they were sending me emails in Spanish and they emailed back in about 3 minutes and told me how to fix. Service!

The ombudsman has started posting in the 2+2 thread (although it turns out that the ombudsman is not a specific person [shock horror]).

If you read down from this post, there are several others in the discussion that follows.

I have a strategical question to you MR. Ombudsman (If you cannot or dont want to answer its ok) How is it possible that a multinational company as bwin releases a not properly testet and undeniably not working software as this P5. They ideas behind the whole project are great, no discussion about that, but im just horrified that a professional company ever puts sth like this online.

Another great question that I will try to answer from the perspective of the Ombudsman which is at least something.

None of the following is to be considered some kind of excuse. The why/who/when means nothing as long as the client’s performance is unstable.

One thing to keep in mind is that there is virtually no testing environment in the world that can fully prepare us for the real deal. Online poker networks are immensely complex and operate under heavy, heavy load. And networks are worse than individual card rooms because there are a lot of external systems that the room has to communicate with. So we could have tested for nine years I think without still being able to know for sure that everything would work dandy.

The new software is not “just” new end-user software. More important than the 1.0 version P5 Poker Client is the release of the P5 Engine itself. The Poker Clients are just applications utilizing the new technology enabled by P5 and P5 is a far bigger and more important release than the first version clients.
Every line of code in our core system has been rewritten. Every line of our end-user software (Poker Clients) has been rewritten. But they still have to communicate with some systems that are not of the new generation.

I think it’s fair to say that this is where we’ve run into more trouble than expected. A lot of these end-user bugs you experience are not per ce caused by the game clients or by P5. The bugs just manifest in ways that affect you through the game clients.

In retrospect it may also be that we focused too much testing resources on the actual roll-out (which given that we rolled out P5 as well as the P5 Game Clients was a mammoth task) and relied on our systems to work together in accordance with the many tests we have performed once we got them past the critical rollout phase. The industry has a long industry of botched roll outs of new software (us included) so we really wanted to get that right. A bit frustrating to get everything airborne so smoothly, just to run into some unexpected in-flight turbulence right away

Please keep in mind that this is only our take on the situation. We are not testers, system designers or anything so you can’t read too much into the above. That will just lead to a bunch of follow up questions that can’t be answered.

Humble salutes

Ombudsman
Ongame Network

It looks like waffle to me, ice, to be honest. happy

Interesting!

Especially the stuff about the bugs not necessarily being in their software (if that is what the ombudsman is actually claiming). The server doesn't repeatedly freeze because of bugs on individual players' computers. It might just be me, but I don't understand this line: 'But they still have to communicate with some systems that are not of the new generation.' I'm not sure what systems he or she means and where these systems are.

Obviously we all use different operating systems and have our computers set up differently, so perhaps this is it. But the problems have been widespread and there have been multiple server freezes.

If they have rewritten the server and the client, I don't see what else there is. Unless some parts of the server have been written but not others, and now they aren't working together right.

I also don't understand this stuff about networks being more complicated than individual rooms. You write the client software, you send it to the skins, the players download it from the skins. Then that software communicates with the server. I don't see how being on a network comes into it. All the client software should in theory be identical apart from the table colour and skin name on the table. And it's all communicating with the server. The fact that the players downloaded it from different skins is immaterial, surely?

Thinking about it, the balance details being spread all over the place complicates matters. The server must communicate with the skins when you join a table and when you leave, to do the financial stuff. I suppose these systems might not have been updated, and now there are problems because of it. I don't see why this would happen though.

It just looks like waffle to me, but it might well be because I don't know anything about running game servers, and it's obviously good that there is some communication going on. And I suppose it's difficult for the ombudsman to say 'Yes, you're right, it's a total shambles.'

It isn't the bugs that bother me so much as the dreadful design -- not just the cheap look & feel, the slowness, but the decisions about what features to leave out and what features to add.
