A tell or two

Feb 25, 2005 08:09 PM. Post 1
Yo-

wanna's hilarious post with the AA dude preflop, the slow rollin sack of doodoo, reminds me I've been meaning to get a tell thread goin in here.

Why?

Because tat's play of AA on the river reminds me of a tell...and that's the TOO_LATE raise. It's fairly easy to spot a lot of the time- generally, it's when a player bets out big after slowplaying, and a card that kills his hand has fallen on the board. Sometimes this can look like that killer card MADE the dude's hand and that's why he's FINALLY betting, but you can usually tell the difference. I had AhQh in the big blind and got to see a dream flop unraised....10hAsKh. This flop gave me at least 14 outs. I checked, so did 4 other players. Turn, 5h. I checked, knowing 5 buy-in players like I do. The second player down the line flung 1000 chips at me. Of course, he had QJ offsuit. He slowplayed the nuts on the flop and then bet out huge when his little game got in big trouble. It's a panic play, that too-late raise.

Now, it is generally true that there are fewer tells in online poker, but I've noticed several others. -instant versus delayed decisions (could be the server, but still)
(and you have to really watch to get this pattern....some are instant bluffers, some are delayed; some are instant strong hands, some are delayed)

-Any player who raises 1 blind early in a tourney. He or she is an idiot or very inexperienced, but more importantly, is probably a RING GAME PLAYER, and will need to see the best hand AT THE SHOWDOWN to be impressed.

-Limp/calling station who you've seen be aggressive with crap cards....probably has AA, a nut flush, or other very very strong hand. Beware when aggressive players suddenly just call all your bets.

-Strange betting patterns, and long decision times on how much to bet. This usually means the player is a novice, and equally dangerously lucky and soon to be busted.

-Someone who is timing the blinds. Watch out for any player who you can detect timing the blinds. They know what they are doing.

-Someone who almost ALWAYS makes a move to steal the blinds on or near the button. They are a novice.

-Someone who almost ALWAYS bets out if he is last to act. Green.

-Try throwin some bull toward a player and getting them to talk. Unless they are skilled actors and esxperienced players, you can learn a lot. If they don't answer it often means you have a slight advantage, because they have no hands and are betting with their feet. Or...more importantly, they are at more than one table at a time. This gives you a HUGE advantage.

(Which reminds me....unless tourneys overlap and I'm already cashed in one, I NEVER play more than one tourney at a time. For me, I am looking for every single edge I can find. How can you spot patterns, tells, sudden changes in behavior, and how can you effectively time the blinds, keep track of the dropout rate, and play stages optimally if you are two or more tourneys? I certainly can't).

So what other tells have you seen? Z-Fish

another good informative post from a strong player.
I knew when we hooked the Z fish we were getting a good one.
I time the blinds. Does that mean I know what I am doing?
