Cover Songs

May 11, 2005 01:06 AM. Post 1
Ok, tell me what you think about this one. When a "artist" covers a song is it ever better than the original?

I just came across Madonna singing Don McLean's "American Pie" and she butchered the song (sorry Madonna fans). Just awful. How did she get the idea to redo that song, and how could she possibly conceive that her rendition was a good one.

The only cover song that might be better than the original is Whitney Huston singing "I will always love you" (originally sung by Dolly Parton).

What does anybody think?

There you're wrong. There are several covers that are better than the original...

Here's a list off the top of my head:
*The Hippos-Always Something There to Remind Me
*The Gourds-Gin and Juice (Seriously Great, often attributed to Phish)
*Richard Cheese-Baby Got Back
*Devo-Head Like a Hole
*Cake-I Will Survive
*Talking Heads-Take Me to the River
*Reel Big Fish-Take on Me
*Dynamite Hack-Boyz in the Hood

And lets not forget William Shatner's excellent cover of Common People. Of course, there was nowhere to go but up on the original.

The only song i might agree with is cake - i will survive. Gin and Juice is good if you like comedy type songs.

And what about Shatner's Rocket Man. Thats a classic.

you really believe Shatners Rocket Man deserves recogniztion over Lucy in the Sky? Both are brilliant, but Rocket Man doesn't have the EXCESSSSSS of Brilliance Lucy in the Sky has.

What about 'Live and Let Die' redone by Guns and Roses? 'Love Rollercoaster' by the Ohio City Players redone by Red Hot Chili Peppers, 'Hard to Handle' by Otis Redding redone by the Black Crows, or even 'Are you Gonna Go My Way?' by Tom Jones redone by Lenny Kravitz?
All I feel better than the original.

I'm still on the fence about The Used and My Chemical Romance covering 'Under Pressure.'

wow, you think the BC did Hard to Handle better than Otis Redding? I'll give you Kravitz's version of Are you Gonna Go My Way AND Love Roller Coaster which I didn't know was a cover to begin with. Which brings me to another point. Usually when the cover is better than the original the original ceases to exist. See "Hey Joe" on page 407 for reference.
