DO YOU MAKE THESE MISTAKES

May 16, 2005 06:51 AM. Post 1
Do you make these 7 poker mistakes?

1. Getting Too Emotional

Don't let your emotions come out at the card table!

It's easy to get "into" the game, but you've got to practice self-control!

By staying cool, calm, and disciplined, you'll be able to concentrate on your strategy and winning the hand.

2. Focusing Too Much On The Cards

Remember, poker is about the PLAYERS rather than the HANDS. Sure, what cards you have is definitely important, but the only way to consistently WIN Texas Hold 'EM poker is if you are able to "read" the other players at the table.

Study their habits, watch their faces, observe their peculiarities... and THEN focus on your own hand.

3. Folding Instead Of Checking

Don't fold if you can check! Unless it's part of some "bigger strategy" you've got going (like the ones I talk about in my book), then it's silly to fold a hand when you can just check instead.

4. Trying Too Hard To "Fool" The Opponent

Many beginners try to deliberately "fool" the other players by "acting" a certain way.

This usually backfires.

Most people are good at reading body language, and your pretending will only give you away.

A better strategy is to let your ACTIONS fool the other players. Keep your poker face straight and calm and let them fall for the bait by making bets or placing action in ways that will confuse them.

5. Being Too Consistent

The easiest way to win easy money at the poker table is to just study a person's habits for awhile, and then take advantage of them hand-by-hand because they're so predictable.

Don't be this kind of sucker!

If you make the same moves and same bets at the table every time you play, other players will pick up on it so fast that you'll be out of chips in no time.

Be "spontaneous" in a calculated way, and be unpredictable. It will frustrate the other players... and you'll win all their chips.

6. Not Adapting To The Skill Level Of Others

Everyone knows that some of poker's greats are most frequently beat by BEGINNING players at the card table.

A lot of professionals refuse to play with "newbies" because they know there's such a high risk of losing and being embarrassed.

So how exactly can these beginners beat these PROS?

It's simple.

The pros are SO MUCH BETTER at poker, that they are actually FOOLED by how BAD these new players are.

The pros are USED TO playing against other pros... which makes it difficult for them to even "remember" how to play against beginners.

Every card table is different. You need to learn how to adapt your game to each different situation...

Sometimes you'll have to increase the complexity of your strategy. Other times you'll need to "dumb down" the strategy and only focus on the habits of the players.

7. Not Getting Help.

You weren't BORN knowing how to play Texas Hold 'Em. You were TAUGHT how to play.

The problem is, most players never bother to take their skills to the NEXT LEVEL, by getting professional instruction.

Nice write-up. Number 3 frustrates me more than anything. How can you NOT stay in if noone will chase you out?

Number 6 also reminds me of my motto: Never play with crack heads. A crack head, to me, is a player that you will NEVER be able to figure out because they have no idea what they are doing. I played at the CRACKIEST table the other day, at a friend's house. I knew people there didn't really play much and were drunk, so I thought I'd sit back and wait for my moments. I proceeded to watch all-in after all-in on the worst garbage ever. Thing was, they'd land the card they needed everytime, so it only encouraged them. When I wouldn't call, they'd loudly claim that I was afraid to play them. When I'd fold a low pocket pair after seeing a horrible flop, they'd question my sanity. I asked one guy why he stuck with pocket 8's after seeing a possible flush AND straight for the rest of the table and he said that since he had a pocket pair he felt obligated to see them until the river.

A few hands later, I had A4 in my hands and saw a flop with A,K,10. Suits weren't a factor. I bet early, then got raised, and then THEY got raised huge by the chip leader. Here I am thinking that while I had top pair, 2 raises meant someone else had an ace, and that their kicker was most likely better. Thinking I was beat, I folded. The initial raiser called. Long story short, the hand went down to the river and the chip leader went all-in with the other player calling it. The winning hand? 10 high. That is amazing enough if you don't mention that the loser actually CALLED the all-in with NINE HIGH. I put my head in my hands and sat there for a while. When told of what I had, my one friend told me I shouldn't have folded since I would have won. :/

Never play crack heads.

Thats just insane Doox, let them play crazy poker, thing is they will be killed in a real game. If they played real here, or for higher limits at casinos, more than likely they will get whats coming to them. The way they play they deserve it. wink

Oh, I know, you know, and everyone else here knows that....too bad they can't grasp that sad Sure, it was a friendly game with low-stakes, but it was frustrating as hell. Both games I played, I finished 3rd out of 8 because I stayed out of the crack-head all-in matches. Thing was, I'd be 3rd on a table of 3 and be facing 2 monster crack head chip stacks, so I never had a chance.
