Conservative friends and acquaintances

Sep 21, 2005 04:18 PM. Post 1
It is very frustrating to converse with intelligent folk who dig in their heels and refuse even to consider that they might be wrong about the moral compass of our current leadership.
The war was/is wrong.
The tax cut was/is wrong.
The lack of timely and compassionate response to Katrina was/is wrong.
Lack of health care for the poor was/is wrong.
Of course, the list could go on.
Why can't we see the truth or at least look for it. I am reminded of a passage from Milton's piece on censorship, Areopagitica.

"A man may be a heretic in the truth; and if he believe things only because his pastor says so, or the assembly so determines, without knowing other reason, though his belief be true, yet the very truth he holds becomes his heresy."
John Milton

tybee, nobody knows where the Democratic leadership stands on these issues, except taxes. That's why Kerry lost. Where did he stand on your list, save Katrina. Hillary tried to change our health care system, but failed. Blame her. My heels arn't dug in, but where are your ideas and solutions to big problems that affect our country?

When costs go up, the effects are disproportionately harmful to those in the lower income brackets. Unless you are in the top one percent in terms of wealth, the current administration has done little for you. I cannot bear to see my fellow citizens suffering when I know we can and should do better. Greed is an ugly monster can can lead to dire consequences. Read A Tale of Two Cities.

The lower income brackets will always be effected negatively in a capitalist society. That's the way it is and always will be, unless you want to change to Socialism. Is that where we should take the country?

Thanks for laying out your sides solutions to the problems that face this country. As expected, you have none to offer.

so flippant and sardonic, just as we get from the White House. No solutions are offered? What solutions are being made available now? Go to war? For what purpose - weapons of mass destruction - no wait, that's not it; they were behind 9-11 - no wait, that's not it; I am angry; I must hit someone - that's it. Most of us left that kind of thinking on the playground when we left elementary school. Now it guides the nation. Doctorow's words - the last and greatest hope for democracy now seen as a rogue nation - how sad.

lol, this is my third post asking your side for solutions and you still have none to offer. Just give me solutions to the following problems:

1.) response to terrorism
2.) war in Iraq

Kerry never said what he would do about these issues and that's why he got his azz handed to him in November. I hope you have an answer.

There are no solutions to those answers Megan. But maybe, if dialogue and communication were used instead of war, the problems would be isolated. Terrorism would not have the support it has amongst the common person if the U.S wasn't perceived as being greedy and supporting despotic regimes in order for our own greedy agenda. Give these people some hope, and show them that you are genuine as well as even handed, and then you will have even more support. But when you go into a country, destroy the infrastructure, involved in scandals and abuse, giving Missiles and helicoptors to Israel so that you can fire into populated crowds..then what do you expect the result to be.

Secondly, there doesn't exist a solution to the war in Iraq anymore. The country is slowly tearing itself apart, and every indicator points to division rather than unification. I would just like to mention, that while there is no solution that next time we feel like we have to go do something militarily that we understand the conflict, the people, and the dynamics on nation building before we do so.

Megan,

What I am essentially saying, is that the particulars of conflict are not what's important. What needs change is a fundamental shift in strategic policy that eliminates covert actions, political interference in other countries, and moves towards active participation in ensuring that developing countries can become self sustaining. It is a fact that most powerful and wealthy countries have prevented poor countries from developing into an economically self sustaining governments. For a country that prides itself on self-determination, we have acted on the contrary to countries in South America and in the Middle East. It is more important for us to have a despotic leader in these areas that suppress the population as long as we have security for our national interests. This fuels the hatred that we see against America today. There are just to many inconsistencies and double talk from our government for people to really be able to trust this government. You are seeing the ramifications today from a multitude of areas. America is no longer trusted and respected as it once was. There is a reason for this.

I think the democrats are just as complicit as the republicans, and in many way I think that Kerry could have been worse. This country needs new leadership and a new progressive movement that counters this fundamentally flawed political system. If this keep going as it is, there are going to be real problems. These problems will affect the middle class and populations under poverty while the extreme wealthy remain untouched. This in not without it's consequences and based on all the information I've received...the public IS starting to take notice.

IDEAS TO IMPROVE POVERTY
1 socialized medicine, we are the only industrialized nation without it
2 decrease taxes paid by poor people and increase taxes on the rich
3 Quit leaving poor children behind when it comes to education.
4 stop spending money on wars and space exploration until we can solve our own poverty issue, It could easily be done if our government wanted it, Wake up!!
