I thought this was an interesting "what if" scenario. While we are side tracked by wars in the Middle East, Immigration, Partisan Politics, and worldwide disasters, BIG BROTHER keeps getting bigger. Check out the link below....
Cool! I've been looking for a good battle with the libertarians on this group, and this might be the issue! Note that we're typically going to agree on social issues, but I think I'm coming from the opposite direction here.
First, that site was decent humour, but had very little to do with reality -- and I'd suggest that this is true BECAUSE of big government in a good way.
The site depicted a private pizza delivery company with access to all of your records. First, that much information does not currently exist in one place, and thanks to a variety of interest groups in our country is not ever likely to. The dept of homeland insecurity might like that much info (and in some cases I'd even say it would be useful to them IF they don't make political use out of it), but its just not likely to happen. And I am convinced that private individuals/companies will NEVER have that kind of access given our country's and citizens current imfatuation with privacy, so I'm not too concerned.
FYI, I come at this from the opposite side -- for instance, I think it would be an EXCELLENT idea for everyone to have all of their health care records centralized in one place, preferably accessible by a password (or similar) protected card that you carry in your wallet. Then no matter where you go, you can give a doctor permission to look up everything they need in one place. No more remembering prescriptions, or what year your back went out and you were on valium or what diseases your parents had -- its all in one place. And the technology CERTAINLY exists to protect this from prying eyes. And even given that some people might do illegal things to try to get it, the key is having progressive laws that give serious penalties if people misuse your info. And this CERTAINLY includes an employer, insurance company or other private indivdual (or anyone for that matter) using it without your permission. This would be a great advance, and offer HUGE cost savings (the numbers I've seen suggest billions a year) if it were ever implemented. But no, we prefer our privacy too much. Please feel free to explain that to me.
Efficient storage of information is NOT a privacy violation -- misuing that information is. There's a BIG difference there, and our national fetishism with privacy is really holding us back!
And btw, I'm very much in favor of big government stepping in and protecting us here, just not OUR version of big government, which is WAY too political and screwed up. The Swedes and Norwegians actually seem to have it figured out though. Unfortunately, I kinda like it here for other reasons, and am not up to learning those languages...
This one is directed to Bob's comment, but anyone can chime in of course:
Why EXACTLY would we ever want to abolish government??? You seem to throw that out as an assumption, and I can't see first how it would ever be possible, but more importantly why it would be desirable.
This is so far out there for me that I'd actually like to hear your reasoning before I try to respond.
Dammit. I was working on a lengthy response & lost it (serves me right for not following my own advice and doing long posts in Word first). I do have one, but it will take some time. I apologize for my dumb error & your patience is much appreciated.
