There once was a beech tree and a birch tree that grew up beside each other. Year after year, each tree would try to grow bigger than the other did. After 20 years, a tiny little tree started growing out of the ground exactly between the two of them. The beech tree said, “That tree is a son of a beech” and the birch tree said, “That tree is a son of a birch.” Back and forth, they argued what the little tree could be. One day a woodpecker came by and the trees agreed to let the woodpecker decide. The woodpecker flew down to the little tree, looked it over carefully and did his thing. The two trees asked the woodpecker if it was a beech tree or a birch tree. The woodpecker said, “Neither, It is an ash tree, and it is the best little ash I ever put my pecker into.”
