| Presentation | What nature of gambling is the game of poker? Risk taking is integral to human existence, as forces we label randomness and chance constantly affect the course of our existence. So what are the fundamental differences separating the risk of calling a bet with an open ended straight draw from the risk of riding a motorcycle or partaking in another risky physical activity. One thing that springs to mind is the pure and simple variables involved in making the decision in poker to call. One can quantitatively judge the acceptability of the level of risk by comparing the ratio of making your hand to the size of the pot. The decision to ride a motorcycle on the other hand is characterized by variables that are much harder to quantify. The percentage of mechanical failure of a certain bike does not enter the mind of a typical rider. Statistical concerns rarely enter most people's minds when making the decision to engage in regular everyday activities. Poker on the other hand achieves a striking balace between chance and skill. Central to the game is the process of making partially informed decisions based on the odds, and on the behavior and perceptions of your opponents. In contrast to this strategic element is the aspect of randomness in that no one knows what card is to come. Keep your head up and your hat down. -The Hat 2005 |
