Children don't need to be taught to play, nor do they need to be rewarded for playing. Playing is instrumental to a child s.. learning process. Children learn through play about socially acceptable behaviors in our society, as well as, how to handle frightening or painful experiences. Through play, children also learn to see things from another point of view and learn to be more creative. Should children play with toy weapons? Ideally the answer here is no, children have many other types of toys they can play with, other than toy weapons, that will increase their social, learning, and cognitive skills. Realistically, children have been playing with toy weapons for thousands of years, probably dating back to the stone ages, and will be playing with toy weapons for the next hundred years or at least until we as intelligent adult humans face the fact that the only thing that comes from weapons is death. In asking the question, should children be allowed to play with toy weapons, we must ask if harm will come to our children from playing with these types of toys or are they helpful to our children..s development. On the "Pro" side of this question, young children enjoy playing army or cowboys and Indians, or cops and robbers. These types of play are very useful in the development of young minds. Through playing these games, children get the opportunity to practice and use "fantasy play," "role playing" and "cognitive play" ( games with rules ). On the "con" side of this question are "gender roles." Little girls aren't supposed to play with guns, and if they play army they must be the nurses, in cops and robbers the girls are almost always the victims. Children therefore learn from very young age stereotyping and that somehow women must be inferior. The next point that needs to be addressed is aggression in young children. Young minds grow, thinking that violence is a way to solve social problems. Games of army, cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers all have violent overtones. Children don't understand the violent overtones that this type of play implicates. All the children understand is that they are having fun. I feel that playing with toy weapons is all right as long as the adults ( parents ) took the time and responsibility to explain those toy weapons are just that, toys and that real weapons are not toys and that they should never be played with. I also feel that the parents should keep an active role in our children play, whether they played with toy weapons or not. I also feel that this type of play had more developmental advantages than disadvantages. In concluding, as a parent I feel that by allowing children to play with toy weapons that it has helped them be creative and better able to deal with social problems concerning guns and what is appropriate and inappropriate use of guns and has helped them learn about rules. Parents need to keep watch on their children..s play and explain that a gun is not a toy, but that there are toy guns. Through the use of toy weapons parents can teach their children values and morals about life and death. Real guns if used properly by the military or law enforcement officers, are useful tools to prevent harm to society as a whole. Real guns used improperly by drug dealers or criminals are a threat to society. Finally, if we keep our children from playing with toy weapons we would be subjecting our child to be ridiculed by their peers. What are you a "sissy" you can't play Army? If parents were to keep their children away from everything that may be harmful we would have to keep our children in closed boxes.
