| Presentation | I get a lot of questions about my name and where it came from. Considering this is a "presentation", it only seems right that I tell you here. First off, my name is Matt. I grew up in Massachusetts, right outside Boston and have now moved to Rhode Island and bought a house with my wife Jess. Now, on to the name "Zyrenthian" (an a bit more about me and Jess  ).It dates back a few years when I was in college. Jess and I were just beginning our relationship but we got along so well we just knew we would be getting married. The day I met her, we stayed up til 6 am listening to a bunch of 80's music tapes I had made in high school. I fell asleep in her bed and never left. It wasn’t about sex, we both had significant others and were loyal. It was 6 months of just sleeping in the same bed, hanging out together, and having the best year in college. We just enjoyed each others company so much, we never wanted to leave it. Sure this sounds sappy, but we ain't like that either. The reason I am telling you is because it sets the back drop for how the name came to be. So without further ado, here it is. It was our sophomore year and I was up in Jess's room. Jess had to go to the bathroom and the closest one was one floor down. To get to it, she had to pass the dorm room below hers where some guy was playing some familiar music. She poked her head in his room and said “Is that Jethro Tull”. Well, she ended up coming back up to the room about a half hour later and said she had met someone I had to meet. His name was Jay. After meeting him, I knew first that the S.O.B. was hitting on Jess, but second, that we were going to become the best of friends. Hell, we got along with him so well that we all lived together too! Once again, people just getting along well from the get go. Guess that’s why I chose him as my best man. So, I have Jay to thank for introducing me to some of our closest friends, Nate and Cindy, who were also at college with us. Jay got together with Nate and his roommates to play Dungeons and Dragons every so often. Soon Jess and I began to play and that is where Jay, Jess and I came up with the 3 characters who will forever remind us that even though we are not related, we are like family. Jay, the “Turf Grass Management” major decides to name his character from his biology book. His name became “Raphanus Raphanistrum Cruciferae”, or wild radish if your not into that whole “Linnean Hierarchy” thing. (Just an FYI… neither am I, I had to look it up.) Jess, having just watched Willow, decided to name her character “Elora Danan Cruciferae”. Which leaves me... and I thought up the name Zyrenthian Dycrugin Cruciferae. So that’s it. That’s how it came to be. To this day we still use these names. Email accounts, computer names and such. They always create intersting conversations as you can assume from what you just read. There was one time, we had to transfer email accounts and when we told the cable tech support guy what we wanted for addresses, he laughed and said "those sound like gamer names". There was another time we got a discount on the installation of cable because we taught the lady something new (that "Raphanus Raphanistrum Cruciferae" meant wild radish). So, sorry for the long read but it is my opinion that this was the best way to explain it. Just saying “It was an old Dungeons and Dragons character name” just doesn’t do it justice. Knowing all this, gives it meaning. Thanks for stopping by. |
