They are neither elated by prosperity nor grieved by decline. The heavenly gods will surely protect one who is unbending befor the eight winds.... Never conduct yourself in a shameful manner. Be unmoved by greed, by the desire for fame, or by anger. There are two kinds of wisdom, correct and perverse. No matter how wise a person may appear, if his assertions are warped you should not listen to him. Nor should you follow priests merely because they are venerable or of high rank.... If you do not question and resolve your doubts, you cannot dispel the dark clouds of illusion, any more then you could travel a thousand miles without legs. Appreciation is what makes people truly human. The Japanese word for thankful originally indicated a rare or unusual condition and later came to denote a sense of joyful appreciation for an uncommon occurrence. Having a spirit of appreciation for someone from whose actions we benefit, a sense that " this is the rarest and noblest thing," produces in our hearts a feeling of pride and self-esteem: " I am worthy of receiving such goodness." It provides us with spiritual support to go on living. One day of life is more valuable then all the treasures of all the major world system, so first you must muster sincere faith.... A single life is worth more then the major world system. you still have many years ahead of you, and moreover you have encountered the Lotus Sutra. If you live even one day longer, you can accumulate that much more benefit. How truly precious your life is! "Single-mindedly desiring to see the Buddah" may be read as follows: Single-mindedly observing the Buddah, concentrating one's mind on seeing the Buddah, and when looking at one's owne mind, perceiving that it is the Buddah. |
