I am Physics and Astronomy student, i go to Sheffield University and I am a first year (freshman) Physics student.

Anyway to fill space up I will give you an answer to a question about Relativity.
9. The GPS system depends on accurate timing in order to achieve its position resolution. It turns out that two relativistic effects have to be taken into account to make the system work. What do you think they are? (Hint: one could be predicted by special relativity, but the other depends on general relativity.)
First I need to point the very basic principles of Global positioning satellite systems. The Global Positioning System (GPS) consists of a network of 24 satellites with approximate orbits of half an earth day, each carry atomic clocks. The satellites orbit with a radius of approximately four earth-radii (26,600km) and with orbital speeds of about 3.9 km/s in a frame centred on the Earth and not rotating with respect to the distant stars. General Relativity (GR) predicts that clocks in a stronger gravitational field will tick at a slower rate, thus the satellite clocks tick faster in the lower gravitational field of high earth orbit. Special Relativity (SR) predicts that moving clocks (relative to earths motion) will appear to tick slower than non-moving ones, thus the non geo- synchronous satellites will tick slower in high orbits. Unlike on earth, where flattening of the earth at equator and earths spin (not independent) cancel each other out, in high orbit these two effects do not cancel each other out in fact general relativity is predominant so the clocks tick faster in orbit than on earth.

Any Physicits, or Physics students feel free to post a message to correct or ask for help on relativity. Leave your e-mail address and I'll get back to you.
