About me

Presentation The picture you see as my icon is one Coda, the black lab. She is gone now and my heart is broken. I posted the following on this site a few years ago and I am posting it again to share with you all and to help my grieving.

The Animal Clinic has her listed as “Coda” but she’ll answer to “Princess” or “Baby”. She’s a 4 year-old lab that is so black that she almost has a blue hue. She can spawn hairballs on any tile or wood flooring on command. These things rival anything you’ve seen in the New Mexico desert. Tumbleweed has nothing on her.

Coda is not just a creature of habit, she’s creates household habits. Up at 5:30 am to make sure I get off to work on time. She has a watch somewhere hidden on her body but I can't find it to save my life. I know she has this timepiece because no matter what time the alarm is set for, she wakes me up about ten minutes before the alarm clock is due to go off. She is a creature that knows when its time to go to bed as well. She stands at the door of the room I am usually in at the end of the night and wags her tail as if she is a doting mother making sure I get my rest. And just like your mother, she refuses to take "no" or "in a minute" as an answer.

First thing I must do in the morning is allow her to go out on the back deck so that she may survey her domain and make sure no other creature has invaded her "turf". As soon as she is sure that the queendom is safe, she finds the perfect spot to lay down the night’s stockpile of urine. She squats down and goes and goes and goes. It’s amazing how she has trained herself to hold back from a natural function. She made a mistake a few times during her puppyhood but no matter how long she has been left in the house while I'm at work, she will hold off until I get home. As soon as she completes her rounds of the yard, and scavenges for any rabbit treats that dogs savor so much, its back in the house to stand guard in front of the bathroom door while I shower and shave. To me, this act of protection is kind of nice knowing that she waits on my every move so that she may do "her job". But to anyone who shares this dwelling on occasion, she is a trap waiting to spring as soon as you walk out that door. Now, I always take a large step over her as I walk out. Yes, she has me trained well!!

OK Now to her real "job" Napping!! All naps take place in strategic locations and at specific times. There are several in the house and all require that I step over the dozing dog. It must be her way of making sure I am home or maybe that she wants to make sure she has a great vantage point to watch over me. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just so she can watch me fall over myself in a vain attempt to avoid disturbing her at work. I can’t tell if she means for me to have to walk over her or if she is just a poor judge of where to lay because her expression never changes. In fact, it’s one of the things that unnerve me in the first place. Coda doesn’t seem to care one way or the other. She just knows what her duties are and she carries them out 365 days a year. You know, it would be easier if they laughed like Scooby now and then. At least then we would know they are laughing at/with us.

Man’s best friend. No truer words have been spoken. I suppose dogs have been so labeled because, most of the time, they’re non-intrusive but always there. You can talk to them or not, laugh at them, scold them when they do wrong and yet they never lose their love for you. You can ask them to do tricks when you need to feel in control, blame them for a foul odor or gaze into their bloodshot eyes and know they will lay down their life for you because they see us as a best friend as well. No matter if you scolded them before work or ignored them the whole evening, the reaction is always the same. A dog will just wag its tail and let you know they are still your friends. I haven’t figured out the entire translation of the tail wag but it’s probably something like “yeah, OK, I think you’re cute too, but how about another ear scratch or dog treat”. Dogs have very simple needs and all we have to do is care for them just a little. The deal that was brokered between the two species is the best deal mankind has ever made. Although in my opinion, very lop-sided. We need them more than they will ever need us.

Coda is getting older as we all are but her life cycle moves much too fast for my liking. One morning I’ll get up and she won’t be there. And I will miss her. She may be, for the most part, a hairy lump that impedes my travel throughout my home but she is my lump and she loves me without question. I’ll have memories and stories to tell but it just won't be the same as when I have the genuine article laying next to me like she is at this very moment. I'll be able to tell of how she made friends with a coyote that deemed her company more palatable than with his own kind. Or the one about how she got angry with me for leaving her at home on a Saturday and decided that all my shoelaces from every pair of shoes I owned just HAD to go. That’s the last time I leave her on a Saturday (yes, she has a calendar too). There are many stories about my life with Coda. Most are just mundane day to day stuff that most humans would not understand but she is a part of my life and she will always have a warm place to lay her weary bones in the sunshine of my heart.
