| Presentation | Quote of the Year: "Berating a bad player is not only bad manners --- It's bad business as well." - Doyle "Texas Dolly" Brunson You are probably reading this because: 1) I did something incredibly stupid 2) I just won some money from you at a limit game 3) I am sitting with you at the final table of a multi tourney Hopefully it's not the first one!!! If the reason isn't found above, then you're incredibly bored. I believe I'm a fun person to have at the tables, so strike up a conversation if it doesn't break you're concentration. (Try saying that 10 times fast!!!) I'm still pretty new to poker, having only been playing since May 2004, but I think you can play for 20 years and still learn something every time you sit down. I play mostly Limit Hold 'Em and NL Tourney's, but Omaha Hi/Lo8 and 7 Card have really piqued my interest lately. I'm originally from a southern suburb of Minneapolis. I'm a big fan of the Twins, Vikings and my Alma Mater University of Minnesota Gophers. I moved to Cincinnati, Oh in 1996, and am now almost considered a local. Thank God I don't have to be a die hard Bengals fan - I have the Vikings to kick me in the bean bag every year!!! ***************** My pet peve on the tables is people giving free advice. It just doesn't make sense to want to make your opponents smarter, and it's mostly done to make the advice-giver look smart. Put away your ego and think with your wallet - don't kill the goose that's laying golden eggs. When you get beat by a moron who made a bad play (it happens,) say "nh" and move on. Don't tell them they made a bad play - let them learn by losing money on it the next 20 times they try the same thing. You should be able to get your money back. ***************** Also, a word to those who complain about the random number generator, poker room 'bots,' or any of the other myriad of mythical reasons for a bad beat: IT HAPPENS!!!! If someone has 1 out for a miracle gutshot straight flush to beat you're 4 of a kind, it has happened, can happen, and will happen again. It's cards, and there is some luck involved. Just remmeber that you've probably seen 10 - 10,000 times more hands on-line than off, which is why it seems to happen more (and more hands are played per/hour online, so the frequency is correspondingly higher.) I obviously don't always do well in tourneys, but here's some results I'm proud of: circa May-June 2004: Freerolls (1st, 2nd, and top 10s) - my humble poker beginnings 10/18/2004 $50 European Daily: 1/141 ($1925.50 + $320 ticket) 12/18/2004 $30 Hockey Night: 1/52 ($468 + ticket) 12/19/2004 $100 Grand Prix: 1/366 ($9150) 1/18/05 $50 European Daily: 4/128 ($513) 1/24/05 $20 7 Card Stud: 4/46 ($110) 1/25/05 $50 USD: 5/218 ($523) 2/14/05 $50 USD 2/193 ($1584) 2/20/05 $100 GP 10/410 ($510) 2/27/05 $0 Hockey Night Final 1/7 ($0 - Trip to Sweden) 3/14/05 $50 Long Kiss Goodnight 2/219 ($1752) 6/6/05 $50 ED: 2/127 ($1080) 6/19/05 $100 GP: 5/264 ($1716) 6/26/05 $50 LKG: 4/145 ($580) 7/5/05 $20 PLO: 1/42 ($336) 8/30/05 $50 LKG: 1/195 ($2438) 9/13/05 $50 USD 2/218 ($1744) 10/28/05 $30 MTT 2/167 ($1002) 12/26/05 $20 $10k Guar 1/508 ($5350) 1/8/06 $30 MTT 2/137 ($822) 2/20/06 $10 MTT 2/276 ($555) 7/2/06 $150 A of A 2/83 ($3600) 7/13/06 $30 MTT 2/145 ($1455) 8/21/06 $30 MTT 1/201 ($1809) 8/27/06 $20 $20,000 Guaranteed 4/864 ($1866) 9/13/06 $100 USD 3/184 ($2000) And now for something different .......... THE DONK RULES These are especially applicable at the $5 and $10 tables, but can apply at larger tourneys where qualifiers kick in: Rule #1: Never EVER fold AK, even after the flop misses you by more than the average SCUD missle. Rule #2: A2 thru AT have the same value as AK and AQ. Never fold these hands pre-flop no matter what the raise. Rule #3: All pairs are to be treated like gold. You may go all in at will, no matter how many raises, re-raises, and all-ins are in front of you. Rule #4: Any re-raise is an attempt to steal the pot. Always call their bluff by raising all-in. Rule #5: Since any 2 cards can win, any 2 are worth limping with. Sooted cards are worth a "super-limp" (calling a small raise.) Rule #6: When you are the BB, any raise from any position is an attempt to steal YOUR blind. Re-raise with impunity. Rule #7: Draws are very powerful, do not miss out on this chip-making opportunity by folding. Call, even if you need 2 cards to complete your straight or flush. Rule #8: Pot Odds? You've heard this phrase before, but will never understand it. It can be treated in one of 2 ways: 8(a) a non-existent phrase that was made up by those trying to complicate the game, or 8(b) use this as an excuse to employ rule #7. Rule #9: A bad beat is flopping a straight with 3 flush cards on board, going all-in and losing to a flush. Make sure to whine about this incessantly and blame the poker site. Rule #10: After you successfully employed these rules and have a big stack early in the tourney, it is your duty to play big-stack poker. Raise every pot and bluff everyone off their hands. NOTE: these may be incomplete, please feel free to add to these as needed. Any additions will become my property and will be used in my upcoming, yet to be developed TV series entitled “The Special Olympics of Poker.” Good luck everyone. |
