Presentation	Nicolas Karlovich Medtner (1880-1951) "Medtner was a Russian composer who has long remained overlooked. A contemporary of Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, his music has never approached the appreciation afforded the opuses of these other, better-known composers. There could be a few reasons for this disparity. Many of Medtner's recordings of his own works were made under adverse circumstances, resulting in finished discs that were either published on prohibitively expensive labels or never distributed. In addition, of those that were produced, many of his recordings were made in the 78 rpm format, just before the arrival of LP technology. Hence, they were available for a very short time. Professional pianists avoided his unfamiliar works on their recital programs, which limited Medtner’s exposure to a potential audience as well, and the general technical difficulty of much of his output discourages the amateur. One other factor contributing to his relative obscurity may have been his reluctance to visit the West (he made only two tours of North America). It is my contention that one of Medtner’s greatest gifts was his keen ability to manipulate thematic material, often basing large sections or even entire works on very small thematic sets."
