About me

Presentation Prepping for a Big Game

For me, every game is a BIG game. Whether it is a 5-seat Sit & Go, a low stakes ring game, or a Freeroll, I try to be pumped and primed when they shuffle up and deal.

Every day I try to spend at least 30 minutes studying something that has been written about poker, especially Texas Hold'em and strategies for playing online. I keep a book in each of my bathrooms, so I can "multi-task" when sitting on the john! I read and re-read e-books, newsletters and articles on a variety of poker sites. The more ammunition I can load into my brain, the more ammunition I can fire at my opponents.

I always do some stretching exercises before sitting down to play. It may be a long time before I have more a five minute break every hour. Often I will throw in a few more stretches during those short breaks or even between hands. I pay particular attention to my neck, shoulders and lower back. I don't want them to get tight and achy during the game.

I don't have the TV on while playing, but I do like to have some music to listen to. After making a selection of current favorites, I load the cd changer, grab the remote and get ready to "start the music".

Nothing is more distracting... to me anyway... than to have my stomach start growling 30 minutes into a multi-table tournament. To keep those tummy grumblings at bay and to provide some energy to sustain me through the rigors of bad beats, suck outs and finding salvation in the river, I usually eat a healthy meal or snack before it's time to start checking, calling and betting. I also fill up a liter bottle with cold water and keep it beside my computer monitor... and I often have to refill it during a session. That makes my next and final preparation even more vital.

Last, but certainly not least, right before I'm going to start playing, I use the bathroom. There's enough pressure when deciding whether to make a big raise, fold a good hand, or go all-in without having the added demands of a full bladder. I don't want my Sit & Go to turn into a "sat & peed"!

Now you know how I prep for the big game. You'll have to excuse me now. I'm on the button with pocket rockets and a chip stack to be envied. See you at the tables!
