Once upon a time we sat beneith the willow tree, counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn but that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone. How the breeze ruffled up her hair, how we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn't there, we were young and didn't have a care, Where did it go? Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew. Everything was ours, how happy we were then. But somehow once upon a time never comes again... (Lee Adams, Charles Strouse) Sung by Tony Bennett I wrote those lyrics to tell a tale: Once upon a time I met a girl in my high school years. We fell in love, I knew she was the one for me. The day I met her she followed me home, we sat in my fathers chair in the livingroom while my folks were in the kitchen, getting to know one another... As young kids do we went our seprate ways, yet we were always friends. Never did a birthday, christmas or any other occassion go by that there wasn't a card for me from her. I, being a musician traveled alot and lived in many states, she stayed home. The years passed I married and she sent cards... She married and the news broke my heart, yet it should not have. I divorced saw her, told her of my still un-dying love. But that was once upon a time she said. She divorced I was there but she would not respond, there was another and her child needed a dad... I re-married moved again to three other states played my music, the cards always found me... I divorced, again. Moved to many more places, the cards stopped arriving... She always sent a card at christmas to my mom however and I had moved to Oregon to care for them, I always looked for her card... But could not call, write or otherwise try to contact her... The years passed , I had finally had enough of not being in contact, I called. Her husband answered, knew who I was and gave her the phone... I asked if I could write, no! Could I call again, no! will you call me, no! The next day was the hardest of my life. My mother called that night and said Christy called and want's you to phone her at this number.. I could not sleep, was the longest night of my life... I called the next day to find the love of my life was coming back to me. After 35 years!!! Once upon a time truly can come again.... We've been together now for five GLORIOUS years, it will never end.... |
