Edutainment – Pick the Winner 1 of 4

Nov 21, 2007 Have you ever wondered how that donkey knew your hand was cold? Or why your opponent all of a sudden check-raised you on turn when he showed weakness on the flop?

Well, it basically comes down to this – probability. A key point is that probabilities and odds in poker rarely need to be very exact – there are too many uncertainties and external factors that affect decisions to allow for precise calculations. Instead you must guess your opponents’ hands based on their betting patterns and behavior. It’s rarely necessary to calculate probabilities down to the ninth decimal; what’s important is to develop a “feel” for different scenarios, and to quickly be able to see whether a hand is a big favorite or a big underdog in various situations.

To help you with this, PokerRoom.com has created the “Pick The Winner” mini game. In the game you’ll be shown various Texas Hold’em scenarios involving multiple hands, starting at two and increasing as level increases. The objective is to pick which hand is the favorite to win at each of the three betting rounds: preflop, flop, and turn. Between rounds, cards are dealt just like in Texas Hold’em. Points are awarded if the hand you picked is the best hand after cards are dealt. If it’s not, you lose a life. Note that this means you can bet on the correct hand before the flop and wind up losing a life anyway – such is the nature of poker!

However, the best bet will always be the hand with the highest probability to win. The challenge then is to quickly estimate which hand is the favorite - but do it fast, you only have 10 seconds to pick!

So good luck! Show us what a great card reader you can be…

Tomorrow we’re going to talk a little bit more about probability and give you all the facts that you need to know about this subject. Put your study-glasses on!
