The Grand XIX: brendo_8 Can Now Afford to Buy Lots and Lots of Christmas Presents: Part 2/2

Nov 27, 2007 gripsed.com would bow out in 6th place ($20,704) when he suffered a pretty bad beat at the hands of wekku1, with gripsed.com getting all his chips in pre-flop with Ad Kh and called by wekku1 with Ah 10s. A 10 on the flop, though, sealed gripsed.com’s doom and ended his tournament run.

mysakmysak would exit in 5th, also in pretty painful fashion. With blinds of 20,000/40,000, mysakmysak raised to 100,000 preflop and was called by shark_falls. The flop came Qs 10d Kd, and all of the money went into the middle. mysakmysak turned over As Js for the flopped straight but needed to dodge some cards, as shark_falls was on the flush draw with Jd 5d.

mysakmysak dodged the turn but the 2d on the river gave his opponent the flush and ended his run, although a payday of $27,174 probably eased his pain slightly.

shark-falls’ luck would soon run out, though, when he ran into brendo_8’s pocket kings. shark_falls flopped top pair with Jd 10s on a flop of 10c 8c 8s and shoved all-in but was way behind brendo_8s Kh Kd, who made the call and bounced shark-falls in 4th, worth $40,114.

Cincinnatti1 would exit in 3rd ($58,230) when his Ah 7h was no match for brendo_8’s Ad 10s (especially when the flop came 10h 10d 2c). That set up a heads-up match between brendo_8 (with about 4,200,000 chips) and wekku1 (about 2,200,000 chips), with a top prize of $161,750 up for grabs.

They jostled about for a bit but heads-up play was pretty brief, with the following decisive hand coming just a few minutes into heads-up play.

With blinds of 30,000/60,000 brendo_8 led out for 180,000 and wekku1 raised to 600,000, which brendo_8 called.

The flop came Ts 9c 2s, brendo_8 checked, and wekku1 bet 500,000. brendo_8 paused for a moment and then came over the top of wekku1’s bet, raising all-in and easily covering wekku1.

Decision time for wekku1, and he dwelled for quite awhile. Both players were already guaranteed a huge payday, but with nearly $70,000 extra paid out to 1st place over 2nd quite a lot was riding on the outcome.

wekku1 finally made the call for his last 981,000 chips and, surprisingly, tabled just Ac 5h for A high. While brendo_8 was also on a bit of a bluff himself with As 8s, he had the nut flush draw and actually was well ahead of his opponent already, fearing just a 5 or a chopped pot.

The 10h on the turn gave wekku1 renewed hope for a chopped pot, but the Js on the river sealed the victory for brendo_8, and a huge payday of $161,750 for his first place finish. wekku1 had quite a nice day of work himself, collecting $97,050 for his second place finish.

Congrats to not just the money winners but to all the players who turned out for yet another hugely successful Grand tournament, furthering cementing its reputation as one of the premier shorthanded events not just online, but in the entire world as well.
