Sunday saw the third installment of the special online reunion tournaments that PokerRoom.com has been running recently for players that represented the site at various live tournaments, including the WPT Legends of Poker, the 2007 Poker Cruise, and (most recently) the WPT North American Poker Championship at Niagara Falls.
Each tournament has a marked man with a bounty on their head, and dj_stiff was the player that everyone was gunning for, as he had a $50 + $4 ticket bounty on his scalp. 1st prize in the tournament would also pay out a $50 + $4 tournament ticket, with 2nd collecting a $7 + $1 ticket.
While six players signed up for the reunion (wheelerleo, buildtrends, cheech65, xx Black1, gbpoker, and dj_stiff), gbpoker and dj_stiff never showed up to play their absent stacks, so the tournament was essentially four-handed.
buildtrends got out to a big early lead and claimed the first victim of the tournament, knocking out wheelerleo with AK versus AJ with all the chips going in pre-flop; to be fair to wheelerleo, he did claim he had to run, and announced he knew he was lumping his chips in with the worst of it before the cards were ever flipped over.
The seemingly unstoppable buildtrends train finally hit a snag, though, when he was unable to push xx Black1 off top pair on a scary board, doubling up xx Black1 and making it much more of a contest.
cheech65 was short-stacked and got his chips in pre-flop and found himself racing with buildtrends, but cheech65’s AK prevailed over buildtrends’ 99, keeping him alive and leaving the contest still very much up for grabs at the first break:
xx Black 1: 6,025 cheech65: 5,545 buildtrends: 4,920 gbpoker (absent): 770 dj_stiff (absent): 740
It should be noted, too, that cheech65 was a bit lucky in seating assignments, as he had both absent stacks directly to his left, giving him a definite advantage when it came to stealing their blinds as the last active player to act before them.
dj_stiff’s absent stack managed to survive three all-ins to stay alive, but buildtrends finally claimed the bounty when his AA was more than enough to knock out the missing Frenchman.
xx Black1 grabbed the chip lead when it was three-handed, but cheech65 came roaring back, knocking out buildtrends by winning another race with A9 versus 55, and then steadily chipping away at xx Black1.
In the end it was yet another race and yet another win for cheech65 that sealed the victory, when his pair of eights held up versus xx Black1’s overcards, giving cheech65 the $50 + $4 ticket for first and xx Black1 the second place prize of a $7 + $1 ticket.
Congrats to all the players and good luck in parlaying those tickets into hopefully yet another spot on Team PokerRoom.com in the future!
