I worry about today's youth. Their standards for choosing a mate seem lower than ever. This seems to be especially true for the females where I live.

Before I say another word, if I said "Back in my day" would that make me old? Probably, but I'll say it anyway. Back in my day, when a woman considered a potential mate, she was a fool if she didn't consider what she could gain from it, whether it be monetarily, or in my case, educationally. A smart woman chose a man who could either provide for her, or could teach her how to provide for herself.

I don't see that going on with today's girls. What I see by and large are girls choosing to be with boys who not only don't know what they themselves want for the future, but seem to have no ambition to discover it.

Call it what you will, but that my friends, is a recipe for disaster. I can't speak as to what a man seeks in a mate, although I have my own opinions as to what it should be, like most woman lol.

Maybe for men it just comes down to a good rack and nice wide hips. After all, they are the providers, so their standards are different than a woman's would be. A man instinctively seeks out a woman who can carry his genes on to the next generation. They're not always successful though, because looks can be deceiving sometimes. For the most part, this strategy has served man well.

I chose to marry, not for money, not for love, but for the journey I knew was my destiny. See, I knew I was different to the point where I couldn't accept just any man. I needed a man who knew something about life. A man who had been places and learned things, a man who could be strong when needed, but gentle enough not to crush in the process.

Most importantly, I needed a man with a good sense of humor, cause I knew he would need it, and so would I. I honestly don't think I could have picked a better person for the job. We've been married for 23 years now, and in that time, we've seen our share of life's tragedies and hardships, yet we continue on facing them together.

Which brings me back to the subject at hand. I don't see anyone really thinking long-term anymore. All I see are a bunch of whiners, quitters, and the never-ending parade of cookie-cutter apathetic "What, me worry?" types that drive me to wonder: Is this all there is to chose from anymore?

Of course, it could just be where I live. Maybe I just need to move. Feel free to discuss. Or not. Whatever. very_happy

Tragic.......we are undoing all that generations of women have fought for, and in some cases, died for...and for what? To attract the type of man who doesn't look any deeper than the packaging.

Actually, it's all related Fog. A womans self-worth is judged by how attractive she is to the opposite sex. It's always been that way, and it seems some things will never change. This is something that men are not going to fix for us. It's up to us to stand up and say "Hey, you know what? I'm not doing this anymore"

You know why we can say this and get away with it? Cause women hold the real power when it comes to men. They need us more than we need them. If we decided to stop pleasing just their eyes and their.....umm.......joysticks, then maybe they'd be forced to look a little deeper for what they want. Yeah, I know....I'm a dreamer.

What you say is true, but if women didn't have that hairy little tuft between their legs, most of them would have a bounty of their heads.

Not all men are that shallow that they go for looks only.......yes, someone's looks might be what attracts them at first but I feel men do look a bit deeper when it is a relationship they are looking for....if it is just for a nite then looks are what they want

I also believe that girls need to take care of themselves......most girls up here go to college and get a job before thinking about marrying .......and if they don't go to school they get a job and work to support themselves.....I feel this is very important....girls need to realize that if they can provide for themselves then they will not get stuck in an unhappy marriage just because they don't have the money to make it on their own

I agree with you p. I think most girls today try to get a good education and a career. They seem to be doing a lot of the things that interest them before they start thinking of marriage and family. It's good to become a strong, independent woman first.

That’s true, but only because of today’s life-style.
But just think for a minute about how vulnerable our life-style is, because so much of it depends on technology that is itself so fragile and vulnerable.
It might be a rash of natural disasters, or a global war, or acts of terrorism, or all of these, or something else. But it wouldn’t take as much you might think to set us back a long way. Maybe even bring on World-wide Anarchy.
Some of the tough and resourceful broads like you could maybe pick up an M-16 and survive. But what about the rest?
Because men have, to a large extent, bought into the fallacy that says they need to be more sensitive, thoughtful, sympathetic, mild-mannered creatures, the Brittney Spears wannabes would find out that they’re not as empowered as they thought. If THAT happens, they’re gonna be looking for John Wayne, Tom Selleck, Alan Ladd and Robert Mitchum----and finding John Ritter, Tom Hanks, Alan Alda and Robert Redford.

Seriously though, this is a thought provoking and, a very well written "think piece" for which I have scores of ideas swimming around in my head all at once - and not a lot of ability to organize them into cohesive thoughts. .


I don't have a ton of experience with the young women of today - but what I have seen in shopping malls and other places where teens and young adults tend to hang out is this: I see teen girls dressing in a way that advertises their sexuality to the point where I wonder that they are not grabbed and raped by the seemingly out of control teen boys wandering around in packs like ravenous wolves looking to eat someone all up (figuratively speaking of course).

I agree that the message these girls get is derived from the warblings of Ms. Spears et al...but its also from those "rap doods" - you know what I'm talking about - the big guy with the even bigger pants and the heavy gold chains - singing about his HO's and bitches... how the purpose of the female is to service the male - that he can use her up however he pleases, after which she needs to shut up and/or go away while he moves on to the next conquest. .
I'm thinking that this can't be a good way for girls to develope any sort of self worth or esteem. I'm thinking that they see themselves as the HO's and bitches of these "thugs" - men that have forgotten that their own mother is a female - and that their sisters are women that other thugs are degrading in thought and deed.

OK - I hope to say more later - but I need to take a break. wink
