java madness

Feb 20, 2008 02:54 PM. Post 1
Any help here is appreciated.

I have a Mac - runing OS 9 (i know). Since the terrific new software update on PR, when I am loading up the java page to play, a message informs me that I need to upgrade my Java to at least 1.3. to play for real money.

I am running Java 2.2.5.

So I can't play for real money any more.

Last time PR "upgraded" the software, I had exactly the same problem. I found a solution in Pokah - reset my time zone in personal settings rom GMT to ET and back again. That doesn't appear to work this time.

Needless to say, PR support have been as useful as a parasol in a hurricane. Going through their usual checklist of a) It's my fault. b) it's someone elses fault. c) ask someone eles to help you. d) take a screen grab and email it to technical support.

I do this of course, and of course I am sent advice meant exclusively for people running Windows on PCs, even though at every turn I have told them I have a Mac.

According to mey last PR support guy, they don't really get Mac users on PR. Strange, I said, considering that it's the only poker site in the world I can use running OS 9. And considering that until a couple of years ago, it was pretty much the only site in the world that anyone with a Mac could use. And considering that anyone I know who has a Mac plays here...

Any fixes, people?

The version number pr referred to is for windows java. It seems all you need to do is update your mac java to the latest version. Unfortunately, i doubt the latest version will work on OS9. Gl

Thanks for that bugz.

If pokerroom just told me that they aren't supporting OS 9 any more, so screw me, I guess I and any other OS 9 users would have to accept it.

What annoys me is that they won't tell me this, probably because they don't know whether or not their upgrade has just removed the possibility of playing cash poker on any website in the world to any player in the world with a pre OS X Mac.

It has always struck me as weird that PR, the most and in some cases only Mac friendly poker site among the 500 or so sites out there, seems to be entirely unaware of the fact.

Last time they upgraded, I had the same (pop up telling me to update Java) and was given the usual level of support. ie: have you tried clearing your cache?.

Pokah supplied me with a fix: change my personal settings from GMT to ET and back again, to con the dodgy new PR software in some way. It worked!

Failing that kind of inspirational fix found from the hallowed Pokah pages (it didn't work this time) I am forced with buying a PC or an OS X Mac to play poker for money.

And if I do that, what is my insentive to play on Pokeroom? I have been a captive participant on PR for eight years. The people are great, I enjoy the games, but the support is woeful. When I get my PC what earthly reason do I have to stay? The list of my prospective sites grows from 1 to 500, and if the site I have played exclusively on for the past 8 years doesn't care if I stay or not, and can do without my several thousand dollar custom each year, why wouldn't I jump ship to somewhere else?

BTW I am a features writer for Poker Europa magazine. My colleagues and people I have interviewed (Phil Hellmuth, Doyle, Marcel Luske, Annie Duke, Howard Lederer, Chris Ferguson) all express amazement that I only play on one site. Maybe that changes now...

yea Lazlo, I think OS9 won't work at all with the upgrades. The Java being the problem. The required version of Java isn't compatible with OS9.

Well PR's latest update has left me unable to play the occasional play money game. Odd since I run OS 10.3.9 along with the latest Java for that OS which is 1.4.2. All of this (according to Poker Room's FAQ section) supposedly exceeds Poker Rooms requirements. Yet every time I try to open up a table, I get the ole "loading classes".

Standard support answers are "clear your cache" and "update your Java". Yeah, uh... check and check. Guess I cant hop on anymore to play my fake dough games. Me so sad... sad

Exactly the same probleme here : for several days, "loading classes" and nothing else... And the support section is mute. (They just said "The problem comes from Safari", but I've tried with Firefox, and still "loading classes"...) I'll have to go elswhere (FullTilt, I guess). But I just have $87 here, and it's stupid to ask them to send me a $87 check with a $25 charge...

The java version is running fine on debian linux at the moment.

This is interesting, though:
Lazlo

BTW I am a features writer for Poker Europa magazine.

I don't wnt to hijack the thread, but has your magazine covered the security issues at AP and UB? And if not, why not?

That's very unfortunate, Philippe J. Obviously (as an American) I only engage in the occasional play dough game, but you have actual funds invested, and for this site to not have tech support that is better equipped to handle Mac users is absolutely absurd. I've also tried on different browsers ranging from Firefox to Netscape to Safari. None work and as I stated earlier, my computer exceeds this site's system requirements for Mac users.

It's a total mystery. So infuriating.

Hi all

No info yet on my Java issue. Support has let it slip that since the upgrade there are many, many Mac users that are having problems getting onto the tables, but my problem - being able to get on to the tables but only for play money, because I am required to update my Java to 1.3 etc etc - appears to be different to those of you running OS X, who cant load the classes.

Do you think it might be an idea for PR to undo the upgrade and maybe fix it before they go online with it? Or would that just be too sensible, and stop them losing money and customers left right and centre.

Muss, I don't know about security issues on AB and UB, but by all means fill me in and I will pass on your comments. I am a) a humble features writer and b) a Mac user with OS 9 who can only dream of playing on such exotic sites.

You would think that as a legitimate website, Poker Room would TEST their upgrades on all platforms prior to releasing them.

Huh. Like you said Lazlo, too sensible I guess.

And contrary to what Poker Room might want it's players to believe, there are MANY Mac users on this site. It would behoove Poker room to get on the ball and fix this major problem ASAP, rather than continue to alienate an entire segment of their audience.
