2008 Tri-Nations Rugby prediction thread

Jul 3, 2008 11:18 AM. Post 1
Before I begin let me just say that, yes, this is a shameless attempt at creating a reasonable facsimile of amh’s now legendary Euro 2008 prediction thread.

Although, in my defense, I’m pretty sure there was at least one person who said they liked the idea when I first mentioned it.

The format will be similar and the winner will receive $33.00 worth of tournament tickets. The winner will also get to choose how he/she would like the $33 split ie. $20+2 and $10+1 / 6 x $5+0.50 / 3 x $10+1 etc.

As I’m somewhat new to setting these kinds of things up, there may be one or two oversights. If so, please let me know.

Closing time for predictions will be at 07:30 GMT on Saturday 5 July.

Categories will be as follows:

8pts for predicting the winner

5pts for top try scorer

3pts for top points scorer

2pts for the Bledisloe Cup winner

1pt for biggest win margin

1pt for correct final log standings

1pt for number of drop goals scored

1pt for correct number of tries scored per team (plus 2 bonus points for correctly predicting ALL 3 teams total tries scored)

Good luck!

Vinnie

Thanks Ratty,

The Bledisloe Cup is an age old contest between New Zealand and Australia, which I think dates back to when both nations started playing rugby.

I havn't googled it yet so I speak under correction.

For some background info, I found these sites.

Link#1

Link#2

Link#3

and yes, the $33 does come out of my salary sad

The Tie Breaker:

In the event of a tie, participants will play in a private tournament (participants to choose buy-in, time & date) and the winner will be awarded the tournament tickets.

Sound fair?

Let me know.

Also, thanks to Ratty for pointing that out.

yus! top work, vinnie! happy
for the record, there's 4 bledisloe cup games this year - 3 within the tri-nations like usual, then another separate one (which doesn't count for the tri-nations) in hong kong at the beginning of november, so it might not be determined till almost 2 months after the tri-nations finishes. so you'll probably want to consider and clarify whether we're only counting the first three or counting all four and just hoping it's decided in those three and that the fourth doesn't matter. also, bledisloe rules are that if both teams win the same amount then the holder retains the cup, so people should know there's no ties.

winner: new zealand
top try scorer: ma'a nonu (nz)
top scorer: dan carter (nz)
bledisloe cup: new zealand
biggest margin: 15
final standings: 1st: nz, 2nd: sa 3rd:aus
drop goals: 2
tries per team: nz: 17, sa: 14, aus: 13

this is going to be such an awesome series. nz with some big changes from last year and with some key injuries (mccaw and rokocoko out, and williams questionable), south africa the world champions, and aus who sucked a little at the beginning of last year but came right and now have maybe the best coach in the world, a few new faces, and a whole lot of potential. anyone could beat anyone. any two or even all three teams could finish on equal points, and i have no idea whether it'll be high scoring or not, so no idea on number of tries. any number of players could take top tries too, i almost had to flip a coin to choose between the two i had.

can't wait. very_happy
