Max allowable at cash tables

Jul 4, 2008 02:44 PM. Post 1
I've sat at a few cheap cash tables lately (.15-.30) and find theres guys there with $70-$80 + there and its rather intimidating to play against them. I suggest there be a max amount you can have at cash tables before you either get the boot or need to get rid of it in order to keep playing. its not fair for us small fry to play the smallest amount cash table with big guns there with almost $100 that just push u around.

In a tournament, the big stack can push around small stacks because of the difference in risk: the big stack is risking chips, the small stacks are risking being knocked out of the tournament entirely. Poker books describe this effect in terms of tournament chips having different values depending on how many of them you're holding.

In a cash game, there isn't any difference in risk. A $1 chip is worth $1. If you lose one, you're out exactly a buck. If you have $20 in front of you, that's both the most you can win in a hand, but it's also the most anyone else can win off you.

What this means is that cash games, the strategy is actually set by the smaller stack. If I have $80 and you have $20, it is I who have to adjust my strategy you to account for the fact that three quarters of my stack is essentially useless against you. This is why many NL hold-em books suggest starting off playing cash games with small stacks.

Any intimidation is entirely in your mind. If a bigger stack is trying to "push you around" with larger-than-normal bets, all this means is they're playing bad poker: risking too much money for too little reward. And having someone at the table playing bad poker is ultimately what you want.

Peachie, don't be intimidated. Take a look at a few tables and if you see the same player with the big stack sitting at a bunch of tables then avoind him/her. More often than not, though, the big stack at a table is held by a brutal player who donked his way into those chips. Therefore, you should want to sit there.

On a side-note, let me say THANK YOU to the powers that be that increased the min buy-in from 10BB to 20BB. The short-stackers have a much harder time of it. I love it.
