Card Dead in a MTT

Jul 11, 2008 02:58 AM. Post 1
hey all

no HHs this time but more of a query

I was playing in a MTT last night, 360 entries, starting stack 1500, 15 min levels.

Anyway, up to the break I had been dealt 67 hands, and had seen the flop twice winning none,
and for my one and only decent hand, AKo, my pre flop raise with AKo was folded around
so i picked up the blinds.

normally i'm never this tight, and I wasn't tight as such this time either. In early position I had nothing I could raise with,
best hand I think was J9s

Middle position the same, in late I had a couple of marginal hands, JTo, Kx, Ax but it seemed every time I had a hand I could possibly
see a flop with I was facing at least a 4xbb raise from an earlier position and sometimes a middle position caller or 2 as well

There was also a lot of action on my bb and it was from the bb that i seen my only 2 flops

Needless to say I was feeling pretty p**sed at this point as I wasn't getting a break at all

On the break i was sitting on 800+, everyone else was in the 2k - 6k range so i was seriously short stacked with blinds
in the next level hitting 150/300

so the blind comes around to me and i'm sitting on 83dd, it folds around to the sb who puts in a min raise
I dont think I can fold here, and I'm pretty sure he wont fold to my all in, so I'm hoping for 2 live cards

Sure enough I go all in, he calls with J9 off and it stands up and i'm out without winning a hand in 70+ hands after the flop

My question is should I have made a few over the top moves despite holding nothing in the hope they might fold?
Or would you have held out hoping the poker gods were going to start giving you something to play with?

There was a mixture of players at the table, some pretty loose, but I never got the opporunity to play back at them
with something half decent and if i went out then so be it

I think I should have made a stand earlier than the break with anything, as i was so short after the break i had no impact but
was wondering what you would do under those circumstances

Cheers
JC

you make a good point yourself.. when you decided to make a move with an inferior hand you had no fold equity left... there was no way the other guy was folding to your shove.. that's an important part of shoving with air for me..

as to making a move earlier.. you didn't say what buy-in we are playing here but a resteal in the first hour of a 5'er type tourny is hard as so many people are willing to call a re-shove with AJ and even worse..

Thanks Torben

It was a 15+1 tourney, standard was pretty ok and most people had the goods at the showdown.

then a well timed shove could have been a good idea...

but as you said you didn't like your hands at any time... what kind of hands do you look for when making a move with what you must assume is an inferior hand?

looking for a good spot for a positional raise more than anything, but if i do get called want to have some outs

so depending on my postition and the situation, I would shove medium to low pocket pairs, getting lower the shorter I get.
Suited A, suited connectors 89+

again the range is probably decreasing all the time but I'm always hoping to find something decent that I can shove with but the shorter I get the more chance its just going to end up a race

I would have shoved any (suited) connector (not first in per se; in this cases it aint bad to gamble) any at least Q hi hand when first in way before this point. Ic you basically shouldnt care at all about your tourneylife while having such a streak. You cant have 800 chips and get a bb of 300.

Just use Harringtons theory for how to play in the red zone (simply if your M gets 5< just shove the first reasonable chanche) and you ll do fine.
