sicilian17 Slices His Way to a WSOP Seat - by Seth Shafer

May 20, 2008 sicilian17 Slices His Way to a WSOP Seat
Saturday saw yet another player make their WSOP dreams a reality at PokerRoom, with 36 players turning out for the WSOP online finals that guaranteed one player a $17,500 prize package to the 2008 WSOP Main Event.

Team PokerRoom.com veteran whassup x held the lead at the first break and was still sitting atop the field when the final table lineup was set:

Seat 1: Else Kling ($3,793 in chips)
Seat 2: sicilian17 ($14,615 in chips)
Seat 3: whassup x ($23,777 in chips)
Seat 4: kranich11 ($13,693 in chips)
Seat 5: pokah-UK ($6,352 in chips)
Seat 6: TONO14 ($16,817 in chips)
Seat 7: russchampio ($5,273 in chips)
Seat 8: _Sandm4n_ ($7,150 in chips)
Seat 9: Gutenburg1 ($8,280 in chips)
Seat 10: nilex0303 ($8,250 in chips)

Gutenburg1 was another former Team PokerRoomer trying to win his way back on the team but fell a bit short, finishing in 6th place when his flopped two pair fell to sicilian17’s rivered flush. That set up the following lineup when action was five-handed, with whassup x still leading the pack:

Seat 2: sicilian17 ($24,795 in chips)
Seat 3: whassup x ($32,415 in chips)
Seat 6: TONO14 ($20,817 in chips)
Seat 7: russchampio ($10,773 in chips)
Seat 10: nilex0303 ($19,200 in chips)

nilex0303 had finished 4th in the WSOP online finals on Friday but couldn’t improve on that finish, exiting in 5th and russchampio following him shortly in 4th.

TONO14 was the recipient of most of those chips from the knockouts, wresting the lead away from whassup x and holding a big lead when action was three-handed:

Seat 2: sicilian17 ($18,495 in chips)
Seat 3: whassup x ($15,769 in chips)
Seat 6: TONO14 ($73,736 in chips)

whassup x was the next to fall, tangling with sicilian17 in pot that saw a preflop raise of 3,000 from sicilian17 and a call from whassup x. and TONO14.

The flop came 2s 6d 4d and whassup x checked, TONO14 checked, and sicilian17 bet out 5,000. whassup x check-raised all-in for 12,769, TONO14 quickly folded, and sicilian17 instantly called for much of his remaining chips.

whassup x was holding Qd 10d for the flush draw (plus overcards) and sicilian17 was holding Ac 5d, with just ace high, 5 kicker and a gutshot straight draw. The turn and river were blanks and sicilian17’s ace high played, eliminating whassup x in 3rd and setting up the following heads-up battle:

Seat 2: sicilian17 ($37,264 in chips)
Seat 6: TONO14 ($70,736 in chips)

sicilan17 would chip away at TONO14’s lead until he held a slight chip lead himself, 55,000 to TONO14’s 53,000, when the two would tangle in the final hand of the day.

TONO14 raised to 3,000 pre-flop and sicilian17 made the call. The flop came 3c 7d 2s and TONO14 bet 4,000, which sicilian17 called. The turn was the Qd, TONO14 bet 6,000, sicilian17 raised to 20,000, and TONO14 came over the top, shoving the rest of his chips in.

sicilian17 made the call, tabling 7s 3s for two pair, and was up against TONO14’s Qh 9d. TONO14 needed a 2, Q, or 9 on the river to stay alive but found himself staring at the 7c on the river instead, which gave the $17,500 prize package to sicilian17 and left TONO14 collecting $586 + a ticket for his second place finish.
