The Team PokerRoom.com WPT Canada Roster: whassup x

Oct 9, 2007 whassup x is back for another tour of duty as a Team PokerRoom.com member, and this veteran of many a chip-slinging war is hungry for a big cash at the WPT North American Poker Championship in Niagara Falls.

whassup x got a taste of success in his first foray into major tournament poker, cashing in the 2006 WSOP Main Event, and just missed the money at this year’s 2007 Aruba Poker Classic. He’ll be on his home turf for the WPT North American Poker Championship event, as he hails from Canada, so hopefully he’ll give the crowds something to cheer about.

When did you first start playing poker?
I first started playing many variations of poker since my early teens with friends and family. Draw, Stud, follow the queen, kings and little ones, guts, and so forth. But I started playing serious poker in 2001 at a nearby casino, playing $5/$10 limit.

These days I usually play $2/$4, $3/$6, and $5/$10 cash games -- I try to stay within my bankroll -- and usually $50 and above buy-ins for MTTs, and $100 and over for Sit-and-Gos.

How did you qualify to win your trip to the WPT Canada event?
It was an interesting way to qualify, I would say. I first won my way through to the final by winning a $50 qualifier. In my first shot at in the online finals, I came in 2nd; I entered another online finals and came in 3rd; third attempt my AA got cracked; finally on my 4th attempt was the breakthrough, versus a tough final table.

Which major poker events have you played in before?
My very first major live event I qualified for online was the WSOP 06; it was obviously very exciting for me, and to my amazement I actually cashed.

Since then I’ve qualified for a few more: WPT Borgata 2006, Aruba Poker Classic 2006, WSOP Main Event 2007 and just got back from Aruba Poker Classic 2007 (where I barely missed cashing).

At this year’s WSOP with Team PokerRoom.com I didn’t do quite as well as the previous year (my KK went up versus AA this year) and that was it for me. But I had a blast nonetheless.

I feel like I’m due for the big cash and I’m hoping it'll be at this WPT Canada event. $$$$

What other hobbies and interests do you have outside of poker?
What else is there?? Hehe. I love all sports, mainly golf, basketball and fishing with my son. Oh and I am a pretty big fanatasy football nut, too...

Who are some of your favorite professional poker players? Which players would you be most scared to see at your table at the WPT Canada event?
My favorite players are Scotty Nguyen, Mike Matusow, Johnny Chan, and Daniel Negreanu of course. I’m not so much scared as I’d be excited to play with these guys. The best way to learn is to learn from the best!

Playing the fun hypothetical pretend game, if you won the tournament at Niagara Falls what is the first thing you'd buy with the prize money?
The first thing I would buy is a boat load of shoooooters!!! ;-)
