The Team PokerRoom.com WPT Canada Roster: xx Black1

Oct 11, 2007 Hailing from Denmark, xx Black1 is a great example of the fact that while poker may be one of the greatest games on earth, there’s definitely a lot more to life than just poker, poker, and more poker.
It’s difficult for many of us to overcome being mad about our aces getting cracked by some fish playing J5o, but that pales in comparison to some of the real-life challenges and adversity that players like xx Black1 not only face each day, but overcome with flying colors.

So hats off to xx Black1, as you’re already an inspiration and winner in our eyes, regardless of your results at the WPT North American Poker Championship at Niagara Falls.

When did you first start playing poker?
I’ve been playing for about 5 years. I mostly play online at PokerRoom.com, but I also get together with friends for live games about once a month.

Have you played in any major poker events before?
Never, it’s the first time in my life I’ve played in an event this big.

What’s your life like outside of poker?
I’ve been interested in sports throughout my life and have served as president of a billiards club (www.asaabillardklub.dk) for 23 years now. I lost my right arm in an accident when I was 18 years old, but it has never been a problem as I’ve learned to do everything with one very quickly. In fact, I’ve played tournament billiards with the best in Denmark without a handicap.

I have a wife and 4 children, and my 18 year old son is going with me to Canada.
My education was as a social worker, but in 1998 I started my own consulting firm. I help people with new handicaps (whether after accidents or illness) learn how to not only live a new life, but also how to find happiness in their new lives with a handicap.

Who are some of your favorite professional poker players?
Of course I like Gus Hansen, as he’s Danish and a wonderful player. It´s my big dream to sit at the table with him, look at his eyes, and read his bluff.

Playing the fun hypothetical pretend game, if you won the tournament at Niagara Falls what is the first thing you'd buy with the prize money?
I´d call my wife and children, and arrange for them to travel to Canada -- fly from Aalborg to Copenhagen; Copenhagen to Heathrow; then Heathrow to Toronto, where I’d be waiting for them.

Then I’d book a new honeymoon for my wife and myself, to celebrate being together for 25 years.
And after all of that I’d come home and start a foundation for people who need help after suffering accidents of any sort.
