The Grand XIX: brendo_8 Can Now Afford to Buy Lots and Lots of Christmas Presents: Part 1/2

Nov 27, 2007 PokerRoom’s grandest tournament lived up to its reputation over the weekend, with an incredible 647 players turning out for the Grand XIX. The $1000 + $40 buy-in for the tournament meant that players would be fighting for a piece of the $648,000 prize pool, with first place taking home a staggering $161,750!

As has been the trend in recent months, Day 1a was by far the most popular starting day choice, with 458 players turning out for Day 1a. 189 runners chose Day 1b as their starting flight, resulting in a total field of 647 players. After the usual mix of huge hands, suckouts, and bad beats, a total of 192 players made it through to Day 2, with visions of huge paydays dancing in their heads.

The field was trimmed down to 117 players at the first break of Day 2, with the money bubble of 70th place looming not too far in the future. yvan2007 was the chip leader at the first break, trailed by ImWithSumo, copi29, brendo_8, and BaronVonOx.

shark-falls had shoved his way to the top of the leaderboard at the second break, with BaronVonOx and brendo_8 close behind.72 players were left at that point, with a few short stacks hanging on for dear life, hoping to squeak into the money at 70th place.

The bubble would burst in the next level, with nilli2 on the bad side of it, finishing one spot out of the money at 71st. Play would grind on through the next few levels, with some new faces overtaking the early chip leaders such as luetch, Zver10, and G_Star_Raw.

Having an early chip lead in big events can sometimes be a bit of a curse (although a welcome one that any player would embrace), as it’s rare to see anyone go wire to wire for the victory. While shark-falls, BaronVonOx, and brendo_8 all surrendered their early leads, they were still in the hunt, as the field narrowed down to the final ten (which wasn’t quite the final table, due to the 6 max format, but close)..

shark_falls picked up a huge pot with ten players left, at the expense of G_Star_Raw. With blinds of 10,000/20,000 G-Star_Raw lead out for 60,000 and shark_falls bumped it up to 100,000, which G_Star_Raw called. All of the money went in on the Kh 3c 9s flop, producing a monster pot of over 1,100,000 chips. shark_falls flipped over Ac Ad for pocket rockets and G-Star-Raw was in bad shape with Qh Kd, needing help that never materialized. shark_falls overtook the chip lead again and G-Star-Raw was eliminated in 10th place.

brendo_8 was the next to make a big move, and pocket rockets once again played a major role. With blinds of 15,000/30,000, BaronVonOx completed from the small blind, brendo_8 raised to 60,000 from the big blind, and BaronVonOx called.

The flop came As 2s Qd and both players quickly checked. The turn was the Kc, and BaronVonOx lead out for 40,000, brendo_8 raised to 175,000, and BaronVonOx made the call.

The river was the Th, putting As 2s Qd Kc 10h on the board. BaronVonOx quickly moved all-in for 300,000 and had brendo_8 covered, who agonized over his decision, lamenting in chat that the river was a "sick" card. As his timer counted down it became pretty apparent that brendo_8 had a really big hand but one that lacked a jack, as the four cards to a straight on the board had him spooked. He finally called, turning over his slow-played Ad Ah, and was more than relieved to see the near 1,000,000 chip pot shipped his way, as BaronVoxOx had been on a huge river bluff holding just Kd 7h.

Crippled severely by that hand, BaronVoxOx bowed out shortly in 7th place (worth $14,881, setting up a final table with the following lineup:

Seat 1: mysakmysak ($699,708 in chips)
Seat 5: brendo_8 ($1,008,412 in chips)
Seat 6: gripsed.com ($382,576 in chips)
Seat 7: wekku1 ($2,056,621 in chips)
Seat 8: shark-falls ($1,594,702 in chips)
Seat 9: Cincinnatti1 ($727,981 in chips)

It's the final table! So don't stop reading. Click here to get to Part 2.
