Something of an unknown at the time, Hal Fowler won the 1979 WSOP Main Event in what has often been called the WSOP's biggest upset.
At the end of Day 1, Fowler was down to a crippling $1,700 in chips (out of $500,000!!). Miraculously he fought back eventually winning the event at a final table which included such greats as Johnny Moss and Bobby Baldwin, to name but a few. It's also said that Fowler couldn't afford the $1000 entry fee and was loaned the amount by Benny Binion himself. So we can safely assume that 'Mr. Comeback' was ecstatic with his $270k prize.
Ironically, Fowler beat Bobby Hoff (the man who had knocked Fowler out of the previous year's event) in the heads-up in his title-winning year. On another interesting note, the 1979 WSOP was the first Main Event that featured the elusive Royal Flush, made by Lakewood Louie!
Unfortunately, Fowler's career as a poker pro didn't last too long due to complications from diabetes that affected his eyesight and his legs.
