Edutainment – The Outs Counter 3 of 4

Dec 7, 2007 No introduction needed. We just jump straight on with some more examples of how to count outs:

Consider that you have As 10d heads up against a single player and the flop comes 7c, 8c, 9s. Let’s say your opponent has 6c 6h. How many outs do you have?

If you answered six, you’re wrong. Any ten would give the opponent a straight; hence, you cannot include them as outs to your hand. Even though it makes you a better pair than his, it also gives him an even stronger hand.

Thus, when counting outs, you must make sure that you are only including cards which improve your hand without also improving your opponents’ to a better one.

Removing or devaluing certain outs is colloquially called discounting outs. Discounting outs becomes especially tricky in multiplayer hands. Consider the following scenario: you have Ac Qc, opponent A has 6d 6h, and opponent B has Kh Jd. The board reads 10c, Js, 6c, 4h. How many outs do you have?

The answer is 10. Of your nine flush outs, you must discount the Jc and the 4c, since those would make opponent A a full house. Of your four straight outs (the Kings), you must discount the Kh, as that’s already in opponent B’s hand. Thus, the total is only ten outs: seven cards that make you a flush without improving opponent A, and the three Kings still left in the deck.

Unfortunately things can get even more complicated. Consider this final example: you hold Ks Kc against two opponents. Opponent A holds Ah 7h, opponent B holds Js 2s, and the board reads Qs, Jh, 3s, 2h. How many outs do you have?

Opponent B has the best hand with two pairs, jacks over deuces, so you’ll have to draw to at least a better two pair. You have no straight or flush draws and only one card to come, meaning trips or a better two-pair are the only hands you can win with.

Of the two Kings, one is a heart which will make opponent A a flush; hence, only one of the Kings is an out, the Kd. If the board were to pair, that would make you a better two-pair than jacks over deuces, but if the jack or deuce came that makes opponent B a full house. This leaves only the Queens and Treys, and again we have to discount the hearts due to opponent A’s flush draw.

But opponent B also has a spade flush draw to go with his two pairs, so we further have to discount any spade outs. So in total, we have the Kd out for a winning set, and the Qd and 3d for a winning two pair, which leaves a total of only three outs.

Does this sound difficult? Don’t worry, after some time and with lots of practice this becomes as clear as mud. So start practicing directly with our Outs Counter mini game and prepare yourself to hit the table with the knowledge of outs.
