Saturday December 9th saw the inaugural Word of the Week tournament hosted by PokerRoom.com. The Word of the Week contest is a new one, designed to encourage great posts and ideas shared in Pokah, with selected players getting hand-picked by the PokerRoom powers-that-be to play in the Word of the Week freeroll tournament.
The line-up was a virtually who’s who of Pokah, with wheelerleo, Hels Bels, Puggy82, mussorgsky, Miltbrann, Lazaru5uk, mortimo87, Jeremy-1986, and Jeff_Wood doing battle on the virtual felt.
Not only were bragging rights at stake but the players had some financial incentive to best their Pokah brethren as well, with PokerRoom.com generously contributing a $100 + $8 tournament ticket and a hoodie to the winner, as well as a $50 + $4 ticket and a t-shirt to the runner-up.
With starting stacks of 5,000 and 15 minute blind levels, the pace at first was pretty leisurely, with players largely avoiding tangling for much of their stacks. It would be 45 minutes into the tournament until we saw our first big hand (and first casualty).
Jeff_Wood and wheelerleo tangled in the first big hand of the day, with a hefty pot sitting out there and a flop of 9h Qc 10s. wheelerleo put Jeff_Wood to the test by moving in for his last 2,700 or so chips, with Jeff_Wood facing a call for virtually all of his chips.
He dwelled for a while but finally made the call with AQ, likely relieved to see wheelerleo flip over Q3. The 9c on the turn and 8s on the river didn’t change matters and gave Jeff_Wood a big pot and the early chip lead with just over 10,000 chips.
Puggy82 was the next to bow out, bounced by mortimo87’s full house (who was ahead the whole way in the hand with his pocket pair of tens). Then the poker gods decided to get mischievous Miltbrann, with some bad beats dealt out on the river.
Miltbrann was the first to feel the bite of a bad beat as he and Jeff_Wood got all their chips in the middle pre-flop, with Miltbrann holding Ad Kc and Jeff_Wood’s Kd Jd dominated and in bad shape.
The flop of 7h 10d 2s seemed harmless enough, until running diamonds peeled off (7d on the turn and the 9d on the river) to give Jeff_Wood the runner-runner flush to bounce Miltbrann from the tourney in 7th place.
Jeremy-1986 was the next out, finishing in 6th when his pair of eights couldn’t hold up mortimo87’s AK, with a K on the flop sealing Jeremy-1986’s doom.
Then we were back to Badbeatsville, population Jeff_Wood. Jeff_Wood and mussorgsky were the only two players in the hand, with mussorgksy simply completing from the small blind pre-flop and Jeff_Wood checking from the big blind.
Neither player seemed too excited by the 4h 10c 5c flop, as mussorgsky bet the minimum of 300 and Jeff_Wood called. The 6s came on the turn, along with fireworks, with a bet, raise, re-raise, an all-in over the top by Jeff_Wood and a call from mussorgsky.
mussorgsky flipped over his slow played pocket rockets but Jeff_Wood was sitting on 7s 8h for the turned straight, and mussorgsky was drawing dead with his cracked aces.
Down to four players, the standings looked like this:
Hels Bels would be the next victim, as once again a dominating hand pre-flop ended up on the losing end of the deal when the last card hit the felt. Hels Bels got all her chips in pre-flop with Ac Kd and had to be happy when Lazaru5uk made the call with Kc Qc…happy until a Q hit on the turn to eliminate Hels Bels in 4th place.
Lazaru5k would get a dose of his own bad beat medicine, though, when he got all of his chips in pre-flop with 8h 8d and had mortimo87 crushed, who made the call with 7d 7s. Crushed, that is, until the 7c spiked on the river to give mortimo87 the two-outer he needed to bounce Lazaru5uk in 3rd, on the bubble.
Jeff_Wood and mortimo87 would battle back and forth during heads-up action before Jeff_Wood finally got out to a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish. With Jeff_Wood sitting on about 27,000 versus mortimo87’s 17,000, all the chips went in pre-flop, with mortimo87’s Ac 8s way behind Jeff_Wood’s Ah Qd.
While the day’s results would have predicted an 8 on the river to give the pot to mortimo87, the better hand finally held up, with the board helping neither player and sealing the victory (and the $100 + $8 ticket and hoodie) for Jeff_Wood, with mortimo87 taking second prize of a $50 + $4 ticket and a t-shirt.
Congrats not just to the winners but to all the players, as they landed a seat in the tournament based on their great contributions, ideas, and entertaining posts in Pokah, so it’s one of those cases where everyone is truly a winner, long before the tournament was actually decided.
