efroni1 Grabs a Slice of the WSOP Pie - by Seth Shafer
May 14, 2008
Sunday’s WSOP online finals at PokerRoom drew another strong field of
32 players, all of them looking to punch their ticket to the 2008 Main Event
in the form of a $17,500 prize package that includes air fare, hotel, and entry
fee. With the Main Event slated to kick off in early July at the Rio in Las
Vegas, the clock is ticking for players looking to experience the WSOP in all
of its finest as a member of Team PokerRoom.com.
Rougeetnoir1 held the chip lead at the first break of Sunday’s
finals, but gave way to efroni1, who sat atop the field at
the 2nd break, with 12 players remaining in the field at that point.
efroni1 would ride those chips all the way down to the final
three, when he was still sitting atop the field and firmly in control with a
big chip lead:
Seat 1: Rozza_mite ($22,384 in chips)
Seat 6: DonHansa11 ($11,944 in chips)
Seat 10: efroni1 ($64,975 in chips)
Rozza_mite would chip up a bit by taking down some hands before
eliminating DonHansa11 in third when DonHansa11 shoved
his short stack in pre-flop with pocket sevens, only to run into Rozza_mite’s
pocket aces, which held to take down the pot and kick off heads-up play:
Seat 1: Rozza_mite ($40,935 in chips)
Seat 10: efroni1 ($55,065 in chips)
Not only were the players close in chips, but each had an interesting backstory.
Rozza_mite not only played Saturday’s WSOP online finals
the day before, but he finished 2nd to nammer4life, so he was
looking to follow up that strong performance with an even stronger one the next
day by taking down the top $17,500 prize. efroni1 was taking
one of his first stabs at the WSOP finals but has had plenty of success at the
tournament tables on the year, with many $1,000+ cashes to his credit.
Rozza_mite chipped up early and seemed to be in control with
a 2-1 chip lead but efroni1 battled back, doubling up on a 6 high flop with
As 6d when Rozza_mite called his all-in shove with just overcards
in the form of Ad 10s.
With the roles flipped, efroni1 was suddenly sitting on a
2-1 chip lead, and it wasn’t long before both players’ chips found
their way into the middle. With blinds of 800/1,600, efroni1
bet 2,400 pre-flop, and Rozza_mite called.
The flop came Qc 3s Qs, Rozza_mite checked, efroni1
bet 3,000, and Rozza_mite called (cue ominous music
foreshadowing a slow-play gone horribly wrong).
The turn was the Ts. Rozza_mite checked, efroni1
bet 10,000 and Rozza_mite quickly min check-raised to 20,000.
efroni1 quickly shoved all-in and Rozza_mite
called.
efroni1 tabled Js 9s for a turned flush (and straight flush
draw) and Rozza_mite flipped up Qd 7h, for flopped trips. Rozza_mite
was left praying for the river to pair the board (or the case queen) but no
help came as the river was the 4c, giving the hand and the $17,500 top prize
to efroni1. While back to back 2nd place finishes have to be
frustrating for Rozza_mite it’s no small feat to pull
that off, so kudos there.
And, as always, kudos to all the players who turned out to send yet another
PokerRoom player packing their bags for the 2008 Main Event.
