The Double Trouble Kicks Off With a Bang - By Seth Shafer

Aug 26, 2008 Saturday saw the launch of a new tournament at PokerRoom that combines the old (an online finals that sends the winner to a live poker event as part of Team PokerRoom) with the new. Saturday’s Double Trouble event would send the 1st place finisher to Niagara Falls, Canada for the WPT North American Poker Championship, while the 2nd and 3rd place finishers would be off to Australia for the PokerNews Cup event.

69 players turned out for the Double Trouble online finals on Saturday, with Laessy getting out to the early lead at the 1st break. By the 2nd break, just 18 players remained, with NPKNicklas at the head of the pack.

When the 3rd break rolled around, a final table had been set, with some familiar names still lurking in the field:

Seat 2: scat666 ($20,880 in chips)
Seat 3: Ashamelee ($18,160 in chips)
Seat 4: Mike-Lowrey ($10,470 in chips)
Seat 5: Wieringen ($12,535 in chips)
Seat 6: MickeMusxxx ($9,014 in chips)
Seat 8: g.adsk94 ($56,942 in chips)
Seat 9: dj_stiff ($2,767 in chips)
Seat 10: NPKNicklas ($76,232 in chips)

dj_stiff, Wieringen, and MickeMusxxx were all Team PokerRoom veterans, and all three had been with the Team at the 2008 WSOP (where MickeMusxxx cashed for $41,816). dj_stiff was trying to book a return trip to Niagara Falls, as he not only represented Team PokerRoom in the 2007 WPT North American Poker Championships, but he cashed there for $48,633.

dj_stiff and MickeMusxxx would come up a bit short and finish 8th and 7th, respectively, but Wieringen was still alive and kicking when action was down to four players:

Seat 3: Ashamelee ($21,654 in chips)
Seat 4: Mike-Lowrey ($30,680 in chips)
Seat 5: Wieringen ($59,017 in chips)
Seat 10: NPKNicklas ($95,649 in chips)

With the top 3 finishers getting trip packages, action was tense when it was down to four players remaining, with no one wanting to finish 4th as the unlucky bubble boy.

Ashamelee and Mike_Lowery were both down to around 15,000 chips (and blinds of 1,500/3,000) when Ashamelee decided to make a stand, shoving all-in over the top of NPKNicklas’ opening raise of 9,000. Everyone else got out of the way and the two were racing when NPKNicklas called, with Ashamelee holding Ah Kd and NPKNicklas holding 5d 5c.

The board ran out Qd 3d Qh 3h 9c, with NPKNicklas’ pocket fives holding up to knock Ashamelee out in 4th ($511 + an online finals ticket). The remaining three could breathe a huge sigh of relief, as they were all guaranteed a trip package at that point, with the only question being who would get the $15,500 package to the 2008 WPT Canada event and who would get the $7,500 PokerNews Cup package.

Mike-Lowery bowed out in the 3rd when Wieringen knocked him out, with the last two players sitting on the following chips:

Seat 5: Wieringen ($44,394 in chips)
Seat 10: NPKNicklas ($162,606 in chips)

Wieringen battled gamely but in the end he couldn’t overcome the chip deficit, knocked out in 2nd when NPKNicklas’ Ac Jd held up versus Wieringen’s Jh 9c. Congrats to all of the players who turned out for the event, and here’s the recap of all of the money winners:

1. NPKNicklas - $15.500 WPT Canada Package
2. Wieringen - PokerNews Cup Package Melbourne
3. Mike-Lowrey - PokerNews Cup Package
4. Ashamelee - $511.11 and Ticket to $500+40 Tournament
5. g.adsk94 - $408.88 and Ticket to $500+40 Tournament
6. scat666 - $357.77 and Ticket to $500+40 Tournament
7. MickeMusxxx - $255.55 and Ticket to $500+40 Tournament
8. dj_stiff - $255.55 and Ticket to $500+40 Tournament
9. TUGUDU1 - $511.11
